Meaning and how to use :
Expresses the meaning “An action, status happens right after another action/status.”. This structure is mostly used for unexpected, surprising situations.
Examples:
1. 息子は電話をかけるや否や、出かけました。
Musuko ha denwa o kakeru ya ina ya dekake mashi ta.
My son went outside right after finishing his phone call.
2. 父は帰国するや否や、急に雪が降っていました。
Chichi ha kikoku suru ya ina ya, kyuu ni yuki ga futte i mashi ta.
The snow fell right after my dad had just went back to the country.
3. 会議が終わるや否や、部長は社長から電話があった。
Kaigi ga owaru ya ina ya, buchou ha shachou kara denwa ga atta.
The office’s head got a call from the president right after the meeting was over.
4. 審査官は優勝した人の名前を呼ぶや否や、会場の皆はどっと拍手する。
Shinsa kan ha yuushou shi ta hito no namae o yobu ya ina ya, kaijou no mina ha dotto hakushu suru.
The examiner has just declared the winner’s name then followed by are the applauses of everyone in the hall.
Note:
+) The will, command, request or negative form can’t be used in this structure.
+) This structure can’t be used to describe the speaker’s actions, it’s only used for third person view.
+) Mostly used in writings.
+) sometime it can be written as 「否や」
