Meaning and how to use :
Describe the meaning “no need to/ don’t have to…”.
For example
私に会うとき、挨拶をしなくてもいいです。
Watashi ni au toki, aisatsu o shi naku te mo ii desu.
You don’t have to greet when you meet me.
今なにもメモしなくてもいいですよ。大切なことじゃないですから。
ima nani mo memo shi naku te mo ii desu yo. Taisetsu na koto ja nai desu kara.
It’s unneccessary to note anything. There’s nothing important.
言えますが、何も言わなくてもいいです。
ie masu ga, nani mo iwa naku te mo ii desu.
You and either say something or not.
これは君が借したい本です。今は読まなくてもいいですが、必ず読んでください。
kore ha kimi ga kashi tai hon desu. Ima ha yoma naku te mo ii desu ga, kanarazu yon de kudasai.
This is the book you want to borrow. No need to read it immediately, but you must read.
その難しい質問は答えなくてもいい。
sono muzukashii shitsumon ha kotae naku te mo ii.
Don’t have to answer such difficult questions.
Note: If we want to say formally, we use”なくともよい”.
In some cases we use”なくても大丈夫”, “なくてもかまわない”.
