In spoken form there are the short forms like
Vてしまう=Vちゃう
Vでしまう=Vじゃう
1. To express the meaning of completion, done of an action. In some cases can be used to mean “to fall in/get stuck in a situation” (Example 3).
Examples:
母からもらったケーキを食べてしまった。
Haha kara moratta keki o tabe te shimatta.
I ate all the cake that I got from my mom.
誕生日に先生があげた小説を読んじゃった。
Tanjou bi ni sensei ga age ta shousetsu o yonjatta.
I read all the novel that my teacher gave me for my birthday.
今月お金がたくさん使ったので、今、とても苦労になってしまった。
Kongetsu okane ga takusan tsukatta node, ima, totemo kurou ni natte shimatta.
I spent a lot of money this month so I’m in a tough situation now.
2. To express the meaning “having done something not on purpose”. In some cases, it also expresses the meaning of regret, sorry.. While in some cases, it means “it’s going to happen either way/unavoidable.” Often goes with “つい”
Examples:
大切な物をなくしてしまった。どうしようかなあ。
Taisetsu na mono o nakushi te shimatta. Dou shiyo u ka naa.
I lost my important thing. What do I do
母が大好きなガラスのカップを割れちゃった。
Haha ga daisuki na garasu no kappu o ware chatta.
I broke my mother’s favorite glass.
ついほかの人の知らない方がいいことを知ってしまった。
Tsui hoka no hito no shira nai hou ga ii koto o shitte shimatta.
I unintentionally know other people’s private stories.
