Meaning and how to use :
Expresses the meaning “was just..then..”. Describe two events happening almost at the same time.
Examples:
1. 姉は出かけたかと思うと彼氏はお宅に訪問に来ました。
Ane ha dekake ta ka to omou to kareshi ha o taku ni houmon ni ki mashi ta.
My sister has just gone out then her boyfriend came to visit.
2. 息子は家に帰ったかと思ったらすぐに友達と遊びに行きました。
Musuko ha ie ni kaetta ka to omottara sugu ni tomodachi to asobi ni iki mashi ta.
My son had just come home and went out to play with his friends.
3. 新しい電話を買ったかと思うと、すぐに壊してしまった。
Atarashii denwa o katta ka to omou to, sugu ni kowashi te shimatta.
I had just bought a new phone but it’s already broken.
4. あの人は気まぐれですね。さっきうれしそうになったかと思ったら、今は悲しくなる。
Ano hito ha kimagure desu ne. Sakki ureshi sou ni natta ka to omottara, ima ha kanashiku naru.
That guy is moody right. Just now he seemed happy, but now he’s already sad.
5. さっき空はまだ明るくなったかと思うと今は暗くなって大雨が降っている。
Sakki sora ha mada akaruku natta ka to omou to ima ha kuraku natte ooame ga futte iru.
Tthe sky was still bright earlier but now it’s getting dark and looks like a heavy rain is coming.

+) This structure is not used for the speaker’s actions or behaviors.
+) Not used for verbs in volitional and imperative form.
