Meaning and how to use :

Describe the feeling “try, try do so something so that..”. In some cases, this structure also means “to get used to do something”


1. タバコを吸わないようにしている。
Tabako o suwa nai you ni shi te iru.
I’m trying not to smoke.

2. 言葉遣いに気をつけて、失礼しないようにする。
Kotoba dukai ni ki o tsuke te, shitsurei shi nai you ni suru.
I’m trying to pay attention to my words so that I don’t sound impolite.

3. いろいろな会話のCDを聞いて、日本語が話せるようにする。
Iroiro na kaiwa no CD o kii te, nihongo ga hanaseru you ni suru.
I listen to a lot of CD conversation tapes so that I can speak Japanese.

4. 歯を守るために、甘い物をたくさん食べないようにする。
Ha o mamoru tame ni, amai mono o takusan tabe nai you ni suru.
To protect my teeth, I try not to eat too many sweet.

5. 短い時間で、効果がある勉強をするようにする。
Mijikai jikan de, kouka ga aru benkyou o suru you ni suru.
I tried learning for a short while and it worked.

Some cases use the structure “Vやすい+ようにする”, “Vやすくする+ようにする” can also be used on these cases.
