Meaning and how to use :

Expresses the meanign “Not to the point.. but at least..”. The former part is usually actions, events of high level, while the latter part is of the lower level. The end of the sentence indicates will, expectation, command.


Chokusetsu de kao ni au to iwa nai made mo denwa ya mēru de renraku shinasai.
You don’t have to meet in person but at least contact via telephone or email.

Oogoe de shikara nai made mo shitoshito chuui shi ta hou ga ii to omoi masu.
Not to the point of yelling aloud, but I think at least you should criticize him quietly.

Atarashii kyoukasho o kawa nai made mo ta no hito ni kari te kudasai.
You don’t have to buy a brand new textbook but at least you should borrow from other.

Koko no ji o anki shi nai made mo zatto oboenasai.
You don’t have to remember it word by word but at least remember some of it.

Sono shorui o zenbu yoma nai made mo shuyou na shorui dake o chanto yon de kudasai.
You don’t have to read all of these documents but at least read properly some important one.

+) The formal, literary structure of 「ないまでも」is 「ぬまでも」.
