Meaning and how to use :

1. Describe the meaning that an action happens, then another also happens immediately. The second action implies the unpredictability.

For example

Mado o ake ta totan ni, kuroi konchuu ga tobihaitta.
As soon as I opened the window, a black insect flew in.

ie o de ta totan ni, tomodachi ga ki ta.
My friends came as soon as I went out.

yuumei na haiyuu ga toujou shi ta totan ni, kaijou ga nigiyaka ni natta.
As soon as the famous actor appears, the whole halls begin to shout.

2. Describe an event happening unpredictable, suddenly, immediately event.
Only used with: とたんに

For example

tenki ga samuku nai noni totanni yuki ga furu.
The weather is not so cold but it suddenly snows.

kodomo ha totanni nai te shimatta.
The children suddenly cry.

‘doushite kimi ha totanni sonna hidoi koto o itta no yo?’
“Why do you suddenly say that things?”

3. Phrase “そのとたん(に)” describe “at that moment”, “fight after that”

For example

yamada san o yobikake ta. Sono totan ni doko kara kare ha watashi no ushiro ni de ta.
I called Yamada, immediately he appeared from my back.

kurasu ni hairi mashi ta. Sono totan ni, mina ha ‘o tanjou bi omedetou’ tte saken da. Bikkuri sase mashi ta.
I came into class, then everybody shouted “Happy birthday!” makes me startled.

+In the first usage we can remove “に” but we can’t in the second usage.
+ In the first usage, this structure can not be used to express speaker’s intent . If we want to we can use “とすぐに” and “やいなや”,..
