Meaning and how to use :

Usage 1 :

Meaning : Describe the meaning “Do something while a state/condition persists”.

Example :

暗くないうちに、早く帰りましょう。
Kuraku nai uchi ni, hayaku kaeri mashou.
Let’s go home while it hasn’t turned dark yet.

母が知らないうちに、早く割れた花瓶を掃除しましょう。
Haha ga shiranai uchi ni, hayaku wareta kabin wo souji shimashou.
Let’s clean the broken vase quickly when my mom doesn’t know about it.

祖父が元気なうちに、どこか旅行に連れていきたい。
Sofu ga genki na uchi ni, dokoka ryokou ni tsurete ikitai.
I want to take my grandfather somewhere to travel while he is still healthy.

電車が込んでいないうちに、前に乗ってたほうがいいじゃない。込んで押し合いたり押し合わせたりしていると、とても疲れるでしょう。

Wakai uchi ni betonamu no doko demo ryokou shitai to omoimasu. Mou nido no chansu ga nai deshou.
I want to travel everywhere in Vietnam while I’m still young. There might be no second chance.

記憶がまだよくあるうちに、早くノートブックに書いたほうがいい。
Kioku ga mada yoku aru uchi ni, hayaku no-to bukku ni kaita hou ga ii.
You should write in a notebook early while you still remember well.

ビールが冷めているうちに飲んでください。
Bi-ru ga samete iru uchi ni nonde kudasai.
Please drink beer while it’s still cold.

天気が爽やかなうちにしたいことを全部済ませようと思います。暑くなると何もできないだろうと思います。
Tenki ga sawayaka na uchi ni shitai koto wo zenbu sumase you to omoimasu. Atsuku naru to nandemo dekinai darou to omoimasu.
I am going to do everything I want to do while the weather is still comfortable. I think I can’t do anything when it gets hot.

Usage 2 : Vている/Vるうちに

Meaning : Describe the meaning “While doing something, something else changes”. We often use Vている, but sometimes we also use Vる.

Example :

勉強しているうちに、友達が遊びに来られて困った。
Benkyou shite iru uchi ni, tomodachi ga asobi ni korarete komatta.
While I was studying, my friend came to play, it was annoying.

お酒を飲み終わるか飲み終わらないうちに、彼にもう一杯注がれてうんざりだ。
Osake wo nomi owaru ka nomi owaranai uchi ni, kare ni mou ippai sosogarete unzari da.
As soon as I finished drinking a glass of alcohol, he poured another glass, so I’m bored.

テレビを見ているうちに、母に「家事を手伝えよ」と言われてしまった。
Terebi wo mite iru uchini, haha ni “Kaji wo tetsudae yo” to iwarete shimatta.
While I was watching TV, my mother said to me “Help me with the housework.”

公園で散歩しているうちに、突然無関係な人に呼び止められてびっくりしました。
Kouen de sanpo shite iru uchi ni, totsuzen mukankei na hito ni yobi tomerarete bikkuri shimashita.

絵を描いているうちに、色がなくなって描い続きられなかった。
E wo kaiteiru uchini, iro ga nakunatte kaitsuduki rare nakatta.

音楽を聞いているうちに、どこか雑音が出て途中でやめました。
Ongaku wo kiiteiru uchini , dokoka zatsuon ga dete tochuu de yamemashita.
While I was listening to music, there was some noise from somewhere, so I stopped halfway.

父はご飯を食べるうちに、誰かに電話をかけられてすぐに外に出かけました。
Chichi ha gohan wo taberu uchini, dareka ni denwa wo kakerarete suguni soto ni dekakemashita.

While I was doing my homework, my mother called me “It’s time to eat!”, so I couldn’t continue.

Usage 3 : VるかVないうちに

Meaning : Describe the meaning “an event/ action has just happened/ has just started doing something”.

Example :

友達に電話をかけるかかけないかうちに、彼は私のところに来ました。
Tomodachi ni denwa wo kakeru ka kakenai ka uchi ni, kare ha watashi no tokoro ni kimashita.
My friend came to my place right after I called him.

目を閉じるか閉じないうちに、課長から仕事のメールをもらってすぐにこの仕事を済ませろって言う内容ですよ。
Me wo tojiru ka tojinai uchi ni, kachou kara shigoto no me-ru wo moratte, sugu ni kono shigoto wo sumasero tte iu naiyou desu yo.
As soon as I closed my eyes, there was an email from the section manager telling me to finish this work immediately.

服を着るか着ないうちに、寝室のドアが誰かに強く開けられてしまった。
Fuku wo kiru ka kinai uchi ni, shinshitsu no doa ga dareka ni tsuyoku ake rare te shimatta.
Someone opened the bedroom door strongly as soon as I wore clothes.

エアコンを付けるか付けないうちに、すぐに部屋の電気が消えてしまって暗くなってパニックになった。
Eakon wo tsukeru ka tsukenai uchi ni, sugu ni heya no denki ga kiete shimatte kuraku natte panikku ni natta.
As soon as I turned on the air conditioner, all the lights in the room are suddenly turned off and it became dark, so I was panicked.

田中さんにメッセージを送るか送らないうちに、彼からの電話があった。
Tanaka san ni messe-ji wo okuru ka okuranai uchi ni, kare kara no denwa ga atta.
There was a phone call from Mr. Tanaka as soon as I sent him a message.

解決策を市長に賛成されるか賛成されないうちに、市民が反対のデモを行った。
Kaiketsu saku wo shichou ni sansei sareru ka sansei sarenai uchi ni, shimin ga hantai no demo wo okonatta.

It would be difficult to write impressions immediately without summarizing the contents of this book right after reading it.

Meaning : Describe the meaning “during the period when a state/event continues”. It is often used to compare with the state after the event is over.

Example :

まだ元気なうちは、いろいろなことができるだろう。老人になると、一日何でもできなくて、とても残念な感じです。
Mada genki na uchi ha, iroiro na koto ga dekiru darou. Roujin ni naruto, ichinichi nandemo dekinakute, totemo zannen na kanji desu.
You can do many things while you are still young. When you become an old man, you can’t do anything for all day long, which is very disappointing.

学生のうちは、将来のしたいことをたくさん持ちますが、成長すると全部なくなった。
Gakusei no uchi ha, shourai no shitai koto wo takusan mochimasu ga, seichou suru to zenbu nakunatta.
When I was a student, I had many things I wanted to do in the future, but when I grew up, they’re all gone.

アメリカに留学しているうちは自分の会社を作りたい夢がありますが、帰国すると家でのろのろして何もできずに過ごしています。
Amerika ni ryuugaku shiteiru uchi ha jibun no kaisha wo tsukuri tai yume ga arimasu ga, kikoku suru to ie de noronoro shite nani mo dekizuni sugoshite imasu.
While I was studying abroad in the US, I had a dream to start my own company, but when I returned home, I spend my time relaxing at home and doing nothing.

雪が降るうちは外はとても寒いので出かけないでください。
Yuki ga furu uchi ha soto ha totemo samui node dekake naide kudasai.

Meaning : Describe the meaning “the time when a state/event is still not over is the best time”. This variations of うちに is idiomatic and often goes with 「花/勝負/いい/幸せ」

Example :

どんなに苦痛してもお金があって子供にいいことを与えられるうちが幸せだ。
Donna ni kurou shitemo okane ga atte kodomo ni ii koto wo atae rareru uchi ga shiawase da.
No matter how hard it is, having money and giving your children good things are the happiness.

若い時、健康があるうちが勝負だ。
Wakai toki, kenkou ga aru uchi ga shoubu da.
When you are young, a good health is the best.

疲れるときは家に戻るうちが幸せだ。
Tsukareru toki ha ie ni modoru uchi ga shiawase da.
When you are tired, returning home is the best.

出かけるのは晴れ渡る日のうちが花だ。
Dekakeru noha harewataru hi no uchi ga hana da.
Going out on a sunny day is the best.

可愛いと褒められるうちが勝負だ。
Kawaii to home rareru uchi ga shoubu da.
Being praised as cute is the best.

若い時に絵を描けるうちが幸せだ。
Wakai toki ni e wo kakeru uchi ga shiawase da.
Being able to draw pictures when I’m young is the best.

12月なのに涼しいうちがいいだ。
Juuni gatsu nanoni suzushii uchiga ii da.
Cool weather in December is the best.

お酒を飲むと悲しいうちが花だということが正しくないと思います。
Osake wo nomu to kanashii uchi ga hana da toiu koto ga tadashikunai to omoimasu.
I don’t think drinking alcohol when you are sad is the best.
