It is used to ask someone to do something for the speaker or people close to the speaker.
Example:
1. この住所を教えてもらえないか。
Kono jusho wo oshietemoraenai ka.
Could you show me this address?
2. 今度の会議、私の代わりに参加してもらえないか。
Kondo no kaigi, watashi no kawari ni sankashitemoraenai ka.
Can you attend this meeting instead of me?
3. 昨日授業に出席しないから、ノートを貸してもらえないか。
Kinou no jugyou ni shussekishinaikara, no-to wo kashitemoraenai ka.
Because I did not attend class yesterday, could you lend me your notebook?
