Meaning and how to use :

Expressing the meaning “unless …”. It’s used to talk about a special rule that will apply in some special case.

Examples:

非常の場合を除いて、非常口を使わないでください。
Hijou no baai wo nozoite, hijouguchi wo tsukawanaide kudasai.
Except for emergent situations, do not use the emergency exit.

以外の場合を除いて、上司の命令を逆にしないでください。
Igai no baai wo nozoite, joushi no meirei wo gyaku ni shinaide kudasai.
Except unintended case, do not disobey the order of the superior.

悪いことが起こったばあいを除いて、このボタンを押してはいけない。
Warui koto ga okotta baai wo nozoite, kono botan wo oshite wa ikenai.
Do not press this button unless a bad thing happens.

最低の場合を除いて次のことをしないでください。
Saitei no baai wo nozoite tsugi no kotow wo shinaide kudasai.
Please do not do the following except in the worst case.

予想以外の場合を除いてこの部屋の道具を作ってはだめだ。
Yosou igai no baai wo nozoite kono heya no dougu wo tsukutte wa dameda.
Except in unexpected situations, don’t make tools in this room.

Note: The following phrase is often 「…ないでください」、「…しない」. Sometimes it is said「場合以外は」.
