Meaning and how to use :

Expressing meaning “it feels almost like the truth but it’s actually not”. This structure has the same meaning「と(ほとんど)同じだ」but 「同然」in many cases gives a more emotional and subjective tone.

Examples

あの人はうちの家族の一員ではないが、私と小さいごろから遊んでいるので兄も同然だ。
Ano hito wa uchi no kazoku no ichiinde wa naiga, watashi to chiisai goro kara asonde irunode ani mo douzenda.
That person is not a member of my family but he has played with me since I was young. He is like my brother.

彼女は山に登ったのが来なかったので死んだも同然だ。
Kanojo wa yama ni nobotta no ga konakattanode shinda mo douzenda.
She went hiking but didn’t come back since then so it was like she had already died.

田中さんはよく私にいいアドバイスをあげます。私の心理医者もどうぜんだ。
Tanaka-san wa yoku watashi ni ii adobaisu o agemasu. Watashi no shinri isha mo douzenda.
Mr. Tanaka often gives me good advice. He is like my psychiatrist.

親は一軒の家に一緒に住んでいるが、一日中何も話し合わない。離婚したも同然だ。
Oya wa ikken no ie ni issho ni sunde iruga, ichinichijuu nani mo hanashiawanai. Rikon shita mo douzenda.
Although parents live in the same house, they don’t talk to each other all day. It feels like like divorce already.

高橋さんは長く学校に行きません。退学したも同然だ。
Takahashi san wa nagaku gakkou ni ikimasen. Taigaku shita mo douzenda.
Takahashi hasn’t been to school for a long time. It was like he already dropped out of school.
