Meaning and how to use :

Expresses the meaning “instead of saying N1, it’s better to say N2.”

For example

1. あの女の人は美人と言うより可愛い人のほうがいいだ。
ano jo no hito ha bijin to iu yori kawaii hito no hou ga ii da
That woman’s cute rather than beautiful.

2. 山田さんは天才と言う入り頭がいい人のようだ。
yamata san ha tensai to iu iri tsumuri ga ii hito no you da
It’s more suitable to say Mr Yamada is smart rather than genius.

3. あのパソコンは高い値段というより、手ごろなねだんのです。
ano pasokon ha takai nedan to iu yori tegoro na nedan no desu
Instead of saying that computer is expensive, it’s more ideal to say that it’s affordable.

4. 今日の天気は寒い天気というより、涼しい天気のほうがふさわしい。
konnichi no tenki ha samui tenki to iu yori suzushii tenki no hou ga fusawashii
Today’s weather’s cool rather than cold.

5. この部屋は狭い部屋というより、スペースがない部屋のようだ。
kono heya ha semai heya to iu yori supesu ga nai heya no you da
Rather than small, it’s better to say that this room doesn’t have spave.
