Meaning and how to use :

Almost, nearly: Describe an event which is nearly to happen

For example

車にぶつかれるところだった。
Kuruma ni butsukareru tokoro datta.
I was nearly hit by a car

あ、今日は試験日ですね。忘れるところだった。
a, kyou ha shiken bi desu ne. Wasureru tokoro datta.
Oops, today is the day of the exam, isn’t it. I almost foget it.

馬鹿なことをして、父にしかれるところだった
baka na koto o shi te, chichi ni shikareru tokoro datta
I just did an odd and was nearly scolded by my father

寝坊して、学校に遅れていたところだった。
nebou shi te, gakkou ni okure te i ta tokoro datta.
getting up late, I was almost late to school

道を渡るとき気を付けないで、死んでたところだった。
michi o wataru toki ki o tsuke nai de, shinde ta tokoro datta.
Crossing the road uncarefully, I nearly killed my self

Note: Usually go with もう少し、危うく、危なく、。。。
