Japanese によって grammar niyotte

Note : によって becomes による or により depending on the words behind it, but its meaning doesn’t change.

によって can be written in Kanji, but it is often written in Hiragana

Japanese によって grammar niyotte

1. N + によって

Meaning : by/due to/because of N

Example :

1. 彼は地震によって財産が全部なくなった。
Kare ha jishin ni yotte zaisan ga zenbu nakunatta.
He lost all his property due to the earthquake.

2. A「田中さんは昨日の人身事故によってお母さんを亡くしたそうですよ。」
B「お気の毒に。」
A : “Tanaka san ha kinou no jinshin jiko ni yotte okaasan wo nakushita sou desu yo.”
B : “O ki ni doku ni.”
A : “I heard that Mr. Tanaka had lost his mother in the accident causing death yesterday”.
B : “I’m sorry to hear that”.

3. 東京での火災によって1000人は死んでしまった。
Toukyou de no kasai ni yotte sennin ha shindeshimatta.
In Tokyo, 1000 people died from fire.

4. ABC会社の倒産によって私達は全員失業してしました。
ABC kaisha no tousan ni yotte watashitachi ha zenin shitsugyou shiteshimashita.
We are all unemployed because of the bankruptcy of the ABC comapany.

5. あの人は苦労によって老人に見えるんです。
Ano hito ha kurou ni yotte roujin ni mierun desu.
That person looks like an old man due to hardship.

2. N + によって

Meaning : Describe method, way of doing something

Example :

1. 調べた書類によって、実況がだいたいわかった。
Shirabeta shorui ni yotte, jiggyou ga daitai wakatta.
I could understand the real situation by the documents that I checked.

2. アンケートによって、グラフをかいてみてください。
Anke-to ni yotte, gurafu wo kaitemite kudasai.
Please draw a graph by the questionnaire.

3. 石田さんが出した資料によって、私ははやく提案を考えるべきだ。
Ishida san ga dashita shiryou ni yotte, watashi ha hayaku teian wo kangaeru beki da.
I should consider proposals promptly by the materials provided by Mr. Ishida.

4. パソコンによっていろいろなウェブに接近することができました。
Pasokon ni yotte iroiro na webu ni sekkin suru koto ga dekimashita.
I was able to access to various webs with my computer.

5. インターネットによってあの人の情報をたくさん得られてとても便利です。
Inta-netto ni yotte ano hito no jouhou wo takusan erarete totemo benri desu.
I can get a lot of information about that person on the internet, so it is very convenient.

Japanese によって grammar niyotte

3. N (people)+ によって

Meaning : by N (people).

Example :

1. この橋はフランス人の有名な建築家によって建てられました。
Kono hashi ha furansu jin no yuumei na kenchiku ka ni yotte tate rare mashita.
This bridge was built by a famous French architect.

2. 次のプランは高橋さんによって発表されます。
Tsugi no puran ha takahashi san ni yotte happyou saremasu.
The next plan will be announced by Mr. Takahashi.

3. この女の人の描いた絵は中村という画家によって2年前に描かれました。
Kono onna no hito no kaita e ha nakamura toiu gaka ni yotte ni nen maeni kakaremashita.
The picture of this woman was drawn by an artist named Nakamura 2 years ago.

4. 漢字は中国人によって作られて、後日本に流入されたそうですよ。
Kanji ha chuugokujin ni yotte tsukurarete, ato nihon ni ryuunyuu sareta sou desu yo.
It is said that Kanji was made by Chinese, then it was imported to Japan.

5. あのレストランは世界で有名なクックに開かれて、値段がとても高いそうです。
Ano resutoran ha sekai de yuumei na kukku ni hikarete, nedan ga totemo takai sou desu.
It is said that that restaurant was opened by the most famous cook in the world, so the price is very high.

Note : This usage of によって is similar to に in passive sentences. However, when saying something that “was created”, “was made” by someone, によって is used more than に.

4. N + によって

Meaning : Depend on N to continue to do somthing.

Example :

1. このガイドブックによって街を散歩しましょう。
Kono gaidobukku ni totte machi wo sanpo shimashou.
Let’s take a walk in the city with this guidebook.

2. 今度の試験の成績によって進学するかどうか決めます。
Kondo no shiken no seiseki ni yotte shingaku suru kadouka kimemasu.
I will decide whether to study higher or not based on the results of this exam.

3. 恒例によって、彼女の行為は認められると知らせられました。
Kourei ni yotte, kanojo no koui ha mitomerareru to shiraseraremashita.
By regular, her action was reported to be accepted.

4. 前田さんの決意によって、次のステップをするかどうかわかります。
Maeda san no ketsui ni yotte, tsugi no suteppu wo suru kadouka wakarimasu.
Depending on Mr. Maeda’s decision, we will know whether to take the next step or not.

5. 親の同意によって、留学するかどうか決意を出します。
Oya no doui ni yotte, ryuugaku suru kadouka ketsui wo dashimasu.
Depending on the consent of my parents, I will decide whether to study abroad or not.

Japanese によって grammar niyotte

5. N + によって

Meaning : Something is different depending on N.

Example :

1. 国によって政策が様々あります。
Kuni ni yotte seisaku ga samazama arimasu.
Different countries have different policies.

2. 人によってこんな問題がの解決策が違います。
hito ni yotte konna mondai no kaiketsu saku ga chigaimasu.
Depending on each person, there are different ways to solve this problem.

3. 場合によって答え方が違います。
Baai ni yotte kangaekata ga chigaimasu.
Depending on the situation, the answer is different.

4. 文によってこの言葉の意味がわかります。
Bun ni yotte kono kotoba no imi ga wakarimasu.
Depending on the sentence, the meaning of this word is different.

5. パソコンの種類によってその操作ができるかできないか決められます。
Pasokon no shurui ni yotte sono sousa ga dekiruka dekinai ka kimeraremasu.
Depending on the type of computer, you can decide whether you can operate it or not.

6. 時によってその話を言うべきかないかわかります。
Toki ni yotte sono hanashi wo iu beki ka nai ka wakarimasu.
Depending on the time, we know whether we should tell this story.

Comparison between によって and によっては

There is no big difference between によって and によっては. We add は to emphasize the sentence and this doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence.

Example :

1. 文章の書いた人によって書き方が違います。
Bunshou no kaita hito ni yotte kakikata ga chigaimasu.
The way of writing is different depending on the person who wrote the article.

2. 文章の書いた人によっては書き方が違います。
Bunshou no kaita hito ni yotte kakikata ga chigaimasu.
The way of writing is different depending on the person who wrote the article.

The meaning of the two sentences above doesn’t change. Using によっては just emphasize the sentence.

Variation of によって

によらず (niyorazu)

Usage : N + によらず

Meaning : In contrast to によって, によらず means “regardless of”. The usage of によらず is similar to によって.

Example :

1. 成績によらず、次の年のクラスが並べられますよ。
Seiseki ni yorazu, tsugi no toshi no kurasu ga narabe raremasu yo.
The classes for the next year will be arranged regardless of the grades.

2. ここでは年齢とか性別とかによらず、皆が一緒に生活しているそうです。
Koko deha nenrei toka seibetsu toka ni yorazu, mina ga isshoni seikatsu shiteiru sou desu.
Everyone lives here together regardless of age or gender.

3. 人によらず、ここで皆が平等です。
hito ni yorazu, koko de mina ga byoudou desu.
Everyone is equal here, no matter who are you.

4. 距離によらず、どこでも私達のサービスは展開されます。
Kyori ni yorazu, dokodemo watashi tachi no sa-bisu ha tenkai saremasu.
Our services are deployed everywhere regardless of distance

Japanese によって grammar niyotte

Variation of によると and によれば

によると is the variation of によって.

Usage : N + によると

Meaning : According to….

Example :

1. 新聞によると、殺人の犯人が逮捕されました。
Shinbun ni yoru to, satsujin no hannin ga taiho saremashita.
According to the newspaper, the murderer was arrested.

2. 天気情報によると、明日は雨だそうです。
Tenki jouhou ni yoruto, asu ha ame da sou desu.
According to the weather information, it will rain tomorrow.

3. 石田さんの発表によると、あの提案は来月から応用されます。
Ishida san no happyou ni yoruto, ano teian ha raigetsu kara ouyou saremasu.
According to Mr. Ishida’s presentation, that proposal will be applied from next month.

4. アナウンサーの説明によると、台風が中国に接近したそうです。
Anaunsa- no setsumei ni yoruto, taifuu ga chuugoku ni sekkinshita sou desu.
According to the announcer’s explanation, the typhoon has approached China.

によれば has the same meaning as によると.

Example :

1. 彼の話によれば、その場所は危険で入れないそうです。
Kare no hanashi ni yoreba, sono basho ha kiken de hairenai sou desu.
According to his talk, that place is dangerous to get in.

2. 新聞によれば、日本の最大な橋が完了しました。
Shinbun ni yoreba, nihon no saidai na hashi ga kanryou shimashita.
According to the newspaper, the largest bridge in Japan has been completed.

Related structures :

により niyori, ni yori
による niyoru, ni yoru
によると niyoruto, ni yoruto
によれば niyoreba, ni yoreba
