うちに grammar uchini, uchi ni
Usage 1 :
Meaning : Describe the meaning “Do something while a state/condition persists”.
Example :
暗くないうちに、早く帰りましょう。
Kuraku nai uchi ni, hayaku kaeri mashou.
Let’s go home while it hasn’t turned dark yet.
母が知らないうちに、早く割れた花瓶を掃除しましょう。
Haha ga shiranai uchi ni, hayaku wareta kabin wo souji shimashou.
Let’s clean the broken vase quickly when my mom doesn’t know about it.
祖父が元気なうちに、どこか旅行に連れていきたい。
Sofu ga genki na uchi ni, dokoka ryokou ni tsurete ikitai.

Usage 2 : Vている/Vるうちに
Meaning : Describe the meaning “While doing something, something else changes”. We often use Vている, but sometimes we also use Vる.
Example :
勉強しているうちに、友達が遊びに来られて困った。
Benkyou shite iru uchi ni, tomodachi ga asobi ni korarete komatta.
While I was studying, my friend came to play, it was annoying.
お酒を飲み終わるか飲み終わらないうちに、彼にもう一杯注がれてうんざりだ。
Osake wo nomi owaru ka nomi owaranai uchi ni, kare ni mou ippai sosogarete unzari da.
As soon as I finished drinking a glass of alcohol, he poured another glass, so I’m bored.

Usage 3 : VるかVないうちに
Meaning : Describe the meaning “an event/ action has just happened/ has just started doing something”.
Example :
友達に電話をかけるかかけないかうちに、彼は私のところに来ました。
Tomodachi ni denwa wo kakeru ka kakenai ka uchi ni, kare ha watashi no tokoro ni kimashita.
My friend came to my place right after I called him.
目を閉じるか閉じないうちに、課長から仕事のメールをもらってすぐにこの仕事を済ませろって言う内容ですよ。

Example :

Meaning : Describe the meaning “the time when a state/event is still not over is the best time”. This variations of うちに is idiomatic and often goes with 「花/勝負/いい/幸せ」
Example :
どんなに苦痛してもお金があって子供にいいことを与えられるうちが幸せだ。
Donna ni kurou shitemo okane ga atte kodomo ni ii koto wo atae rareru uchi ga shiawase da.
No matter how hard it is, having money and giving your children good things are the happiness.
