Meaning and how to use :

1. Expressing the meaning “not caring, not bothering about these things”. This structure is often used with nouns of affection and appreciation of others. The following is intentional verbs.

Ex:

僕たちの恐れをよそに、彼は忘れっぽい山田さんに大切な仕事を任せます。
Bokutachi no osore o yoso ni, kare wa wasureppoi Yamada-san ni taisetsuna shigoto o makasemasu.
Regardless of our concern, he still entrusted important job to Mr. Yamada who is forgetful.

親の心配をよそに、子供は一言も残さないで、家出をした。
Oya no shinpai o yoso ni, kodomo wa hitokoto mo nokosanaide, iede o shita.
Regardless of  his parents’ worry, children leave home without leaving a word.

皆の期待をよそに、リーダーの彼女は何度も失敗して、結局プロジェックトをあきらめた。
Mina no kitai o yoso ni, riidaa no kanojo wa nando mo shippai shite, kekkyoku purojekkuto o akirameta.
Regardless of everyone’s expectations, she-the leader failed several times and ended up giving up the project.

2. Describe the meaning “regardless of that situation”. Often used with nouns of status.

Example

経済恐怖をよそに、社長は無理な目的にお金を払って、結局会社が破産した。
Keizai kyoufu o yoso ni, shachou wa murina mokuteki ni okane o haratte, kekkyoku kaisha ga hasan shita.
Despite the economic crisis, the director paid for unreasonable purposes and eventually the company went bankrupt.

重い病気が流行することをよそに、息子はその病気をかかる人が多くいるところに言ってばかりいる。
Omoi byouki ga ryuukou suru koto o yoso ni, musuko wa sono byouki o kakaru hito ga ouku iru tokoro ni itte bakari iru.
Despite the raging epidemic, my son goes all the way to places where there were many people infected.

ラッシュ時をよそに彼は車で行きます。
Rasshu toki o yoso ni kare wa kuruma de ikimasu.
Inspite of the traffic jam, he still goes by car.
