Meaning and how to use :

Describe the past of N1.
+) “でした” is its affirmative forrm. Often translated as “was”.
+) “ではありませんでした” is the negative forrm of “でした”.

For example

Kinou ha ame deshi ta.
It rained yesterday.

boku ha isha deshi ta.
I’ve been a doctor.

kanojo ha boku no koibito deshi ta.
She used to be my lover.

koukou sensei de ha ari mase n deshi ta.
I was not a high school teacher.

sore ha watashi no hon de ha ari mase n deshi ta.
That was not my book.

+) “でした” shortened form is “だった”
+) “ではありませんでした” shortened form is “ではなかった”.
Shortened forms are mostly used in verbal communication.
