Meaning and how to use :

Usage 1

N/Aなだとしたら
Aい/Vとしたら

Meaning : Describe the meaning “if…”. The following part of the sentence often comes with expressions that express the will or judgment. There are also cases where it comes with 「仮に/もし」.

Note : When coming with expressions that express the will or judgment, if you use 「とすると」、「とすれば」instead of「としたら」, the sentence will sound unnatural.

Example :

もし彼が来ないとしたら、私達はどうすればいいか。
Moshi kare ga konai to shitara, watashi tachi ha dou sureba ii ka.
What should we do if he doesn’t come?

大学に不合格だとしたら、親にどう広告すればいいかわからない。
Daigaku ni fugoukaku datoshitara, oya ni dou koukoku sureba ii ka wakaranai.
If I don’t pass the university exam, I don’t know how to tell my parents.

仮に今空から100万円が落ちて、私に当たったら、すぐショッピングに行きます。
Kareni ima sora kara hyaku man en ga ochite, watashi ni atattara, sugu shoppingu ni ikimasu.
If 1 million yen fell from the sky and hit me, I would go shopping right away.

日本に旅行するとしたら、ぜひ富士山に行くべきだ。
Nihon ni ryokou suru toshitara, zehi fuji san ni iku beki da.
If you travel to Japan, you have to go to Mt. Fuji.

新しいスマホんを買うとしたら、やっぱりアイホンを買います。
Atarashii sumahon wo kau toshitara, yappari aihon wo kaimasu.
If I buy a new smartphone, I will definitely buy an Iphone.

A「東京から青森まで車で行くとしたら、何時間かかるの?」
B「俺もわからない。」
A  : “Tokyou kara aomori made kuruma de iku toshitara, nanjikan kakaru no?”
B : “Ore mo wakaranai.”
A : “How long does it take to drive from Tokyo to Aomori?”
B  : “I don’t know.”

あり得ないことだけど、もし世界中の旅行するとしたら、初めどこに行くつもり?
Arienai koto dakedo, moshi sekaichuu no ryokou suru toshitara, hajime doko ni iku tsumori?
Although it is impossible, if you travel around the world, where are you going to go first?

A「現在戦争が起こるとしたら、私達は軍に参加しなきゃならないでしょう。」
B「いや、私は絶対に参加しないよ。」
A : “Genzai sensou ga okoru toshitara, watashi tachi ha gun ni sanka shinakya naranai deshou.”
B : “Iya, watashi ha zettai ni sanka shinai yo.”
A : “If there were a war now, we would have to join the army, right?”
B  : “No, I will never join the army.”

もしお前は勉強しなかったとしたら、今大学に通うなんて無理だ。
Moshi omae ha benkyou shinakatta toshitara, ima daigaku ni kayou nante muri da.
If you don’t study, you can’t go to college now.

仮に7月の真ん中に雪が降るとしたら、学校が休むだろうね。
Kari ni shichi gatsu no mannaka ni yuki ga furu toshitara, gakkou ga yasumu darou ne.
If it snowed in the middle of July, the school would be closed.

君がいなかったとしたら、俺は今の俺ではない。
Kimi ga inakatta toshitara, ore ha ima no ore dehanai.
If you weren’t there, I wouldn’t be me now.

あの時、仮にあなたが電話を答えるとしたら、何を言いますか。
Ano toki, kari ni anata ga denwa wo kotaeru toshitara, nani wo ii masu ka?
At that time, what would you say if you answered the phone?

その話が本当だとしたら、石田さんが嘘つきです。
Sono hanashi ga hontou da toshitara, ishida san ga usotsuki desu.
If that story is true, Mr. Ishida is a liar.

A「仮に3つの願いを与えられるとしたら、何を願う?」
B「皆は幸せになってほしいね。」
A  : “Kari ni mittsu no negai wo atae rareru toshitara, nani wo negau?”
B  : “Mina ha shiawase ni natte hoshii ne.”
A : “If you were given 3 wishes, what would you wish for?”
B : “I want everyone to be happy.”

参加者は100人になるとしたら、もっと大きい会場を借りなきゃならない。
Sankasha ha hyaku nin ni naru toshitara, motto ookii kaijou wo karinakya naranai.
If there are 100 participants, we have to rent a bigger hall.

Usage 2

としたら

Meaning : Describe the meaning “based on actual situation…”. It is often used in the form  「…のだとしたら」

Note : In this case, we can’t use としたら with「かりに/もし」.

Example :

社長にそう言われるのだとしたら、僕も寡黙に辞任すると決めます。
Shachou ni sou iwareru no da toshitara, boku mo chinmoku ni jinin suru to kimemasu.
If the director says so, I decide to resign silently.

A「私はそんなことぜったいにしません。」
B「君はしないのだとしたら、山田さんに任せます。」
A  : “Watashi ha sonna koto zettai ni shimasen.”
B : “Kimi ha shinai no da toshitara, yamada san ni makase masu.”
A : “I won’t do that.”
B : “If you don’t do it, I will leave it to Mr. Yamada.”

本当の犯人が逮捕されるのだとしたら、彼はイノセントですよね。
Hontou no hannin ga taiho sareru no da toshitara, kare ha inosento desu yo ne.
If the real culprit is arrested, he will be innocent.

もう20分ぐらい待って彼女はまだ来ないのだとしたら、さっきに行きます。
Mou nijuufun gurai matte kanojo ha mada konai no da toshitara, sakki ni ikimasu.
I will wait for her about 20 minutes and if she doesn’t come, I’ll go ahead.

先生が禁止だと言ったのだとしたら、誰もする勇気が出せないよ。
Sensei ga kinshi da to itta no da toshitara, daremo suru yuuki ga dasenai yo.
If the teacher said it was forbidden, no one dares to do it.

だめのだとしたら、何を頑張っても結果が出ない。
Dame no da toshitara, nani wo ganbattemo kekka ga denai.
If it’s no good, no matter what you try, you won’t get results.

Japanese とする grammar としたら

Usage 3

(そう)だとしたら (sou) datoshitara

Meaning : Describe the meaning “if so…”.

Example :

A「今回の会議、大事な項目が広告されますよ。」
B「そうだとしたら、私達はこんなに慌てて準備しなくてもいいよ。」
A : “Konkai no kaigi, daiji na koumoku ga koukoku saremasu yo.”
B : “Sou da toshitara, watashi tachi ha konna ni awatete junbi shinakute mo ii yo.”
A : “Important items will be advertised in this meeting.”
B : “If so, we don’t have to prepare in such a hurry.”

来月は会社旅行ですが、行けないです。そうだとしたら、上司に理由を言うべきだ。
Raigetsu ha kaisha ryokou desu ga, ikenai desu. Sou da to shitara, joushi ni riyuu wo iu beki da.
There is a company trip next month, but I can’t go.
If so, you should tell your boss why.

あのやつは家族全員を殺したそうです。そうだとしたら、きっと死刑の刑罰を与えられると思います。
Ano yatsu ha kazoku zenin wo koroshita sou desu. Sou da to shitara, kitto shikei no keibatsu wo ataerareru to omoimasu.
It is said that he killed the whole family. If that’s the case, I think he will definitely be given death penalty.

A「宿題の答えは間違ったそうだよ。」
B「そうだとしたら、もう一度やらないと。」
A : “Shukudai no kotae ha machigatta sou da yo.”
B : “Sou da toshitara, mou ichido yaranai to.”
A : “Your homework answer seems wrong.”
B : “If so, I have to do it again.”

あの地方で津波とともに、地震も起こった。そうだとしたら、被害者は1000人に超えるでしょう。
Ano chihou de tsunami totomoni, jishin mo okotta. Sou da toshitara, higaisha ha sennin ni koeru deshou
An earthquake occurred along with the tsunami in that region. If so, there will be more than 1000 victims.

山田さんから事故で遅刻すると電話がありました。そうだとしたら、彼を待ちます。
Yamada san kara jiko de chikoku suru to denwa ga arimashita. Sou da toshitara. kare wo machi masu.
Mr. Yamada called me to say that he would be late due to an accident. If so, we will wait for him.

Aプランが完全に失敗した。そうだとしたら、早くBプランを展開する必要です。
A puran ga kanzen ni shippai shita. Sou da toshitara, hayaku B puran wo tenkai suru hitsuyou desu.
Plan A has completely failed. If so, we need to quickly develop Plan B.

A「息子は第一希望学校を落ちちゃったよ。今あの子は何をすればいいかわからない。」
B「そうだとしたら、第2希望学校に入学したほうがいい。」
A : “Musuko ha daiichi kibou gakkou wo ochi chatta yo. Ima ano ko ha nani wo sureba ii ka wakaranai.”
B : “Sou da toshitara, dai ni kibou gakkou ni nyuugaku shita hou ga ii.”
A : “My son has failed the first choice school. Now he doesn’t know what to do.”
B : “If so, he should enter the second choice school.”

来週大雨になりますよ。そうだとしたら、皆に知らせて氾濫防止を準備するべきです。
Raishuu ooame ni narimasu yo. Sou da toshitara, mina ni shirasete hanranboushi wo junbi suru beki da.
There will be heavy rain next week. If so, we must inform everyone and prepare for flood prevention.
