JLPT N2 Grammar lesson 31. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N2 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Structure 151:

Nを/ Vるのを/ Vたのを + きっかけに/きっかけとして/きっかけにして/契機に/契機として

Explanation:

On the occasion of.

For example:

高校卒業をきっかけに髪を赤く染めた。
Koukou sotsugyou wo kikkake ni kami wo akaku someta.
After graduating from high school, I dyed my hair red.

退院を契機に故郷に帰りました。
Taiin wo keiki ni furusato ni kaerimashita.
I returned to my hometown after being discharged from the hospital.

昨年の事故を契機として、安全対策が強化された。
Sakunen no jiko o keiki to shite, anzen taisaku ga kyouka sareta.
On the occasion of last year’s accident, the safety methods have been accelerated.

Structure 152:

Nの/ Vる+際に

Explanation:

When/ while
More formal than 時、used for a certain occasion, rarely used as negation.

For example:

海外旅行の際に、パスポートが必要です。
Kaigai ryokou no sai ni, pasupooto ga hitsuyou desu.
When traveling abroad, a passport is required .

他人と話す際には、言葉遣いに気をつけてください。
Tanin to hanasu sai ni wa, kotobadzukai ni ki wo tsukete kudasai.
When talking with others, be careful with your words.

Structure 153:

A(事実)。それなのに B(予想外の結果)

Explanation:

Even though ~ however

For example:

私は一生懸命勉強した。それなのにテストで悪い点を取った。
Watashi wa isshoukenmei benkyou shita. Sorenanoni tesuto de warui ten wo totta.
I studied hard. Despite that, I got a bad score on the test.

毎日薬を飲んでいる。それなのに病気が治らない。
Mainichi kusuri wo nonde iru. Sorenanoni byouki ga naoranai.
I take medicine every day. Despite that, my illness doesn’t go away.

Structure 154:

A (状況)。それでも B(結果)

Explanation:

A. But B

For example:

彼は悪い人だ。それでも私は彼が好き。
Kare wa warui hito da. Soredemo watashi wa kare ga suki.
He is a bad person. But even so, I still like him. 

食べ物がまずかった。それでも彼女は美味しそうに食べた。
Tabemono ga mazukatta. Soredemo kanojo wa oishisou ni tabeta.
The food was bad. But even so, she still ate deliciously.

Structure 155:

「A」「それなら(ば)B」

Explanation:

in that case. So (we should). A. It’s better/ Had better to B

For example:

「お腹がすいた。」「それなら、おにぎりを買ってあげよう。」
“Onaka ga suita.”   “Sorenara, onigiri wo katte ageyou.”
“I’m hungry.”  “Then I’ll buy you a rice ball.” 

「今、それ、やりたくない。」「それならやらなくていいよ。」
“Ima, sore, yaritakunai.”  “Sorenara yaranakute ii yo.”
“Right now I don’t want to do that.”  “In that case, you don’t have to do it.”
