Question: How much will a male pay in total?

  1. 3800 yen
  2. 4000 yen
  3. 4300 yen
  4. 4500 yen

Instruction to practise:

Exercise format: Calculate the amount.

In order to understand and make this type of lesson effectively, you can do the following steps:

1. Catch the topic and the question:

First of all, you need to understand what the situation there is?

動物園の窓口で、男の人が入園料について聞いています。
At the entrance of the zoo, a man is asking about the admission fee.

=> Subject: admission fee (money)

The question is :

全部でいくら払いますか。
How much will a male pay in total?

=> With this format, you will focus on noting words that show the amount, object and vocabulary about money.

2. Note the main ideas:

Basing on the topic and the question, you need to catch the important key world  such as the numbers, objects and vocabulary about the price.

Number:   1000円, 800円, 500円, 3人, 2人

Vocabulary about the price:

2割引き (にわりびき):  20% discount

半額 (はんがく): half price

Object:

シニア :senior

大人 (おとな): adult

子ども (こども): children

お子様(おこさま): children (formal )

小学生 (しょうがくせい)primary school student

3. Choosing the answer:

Anwser :  3 ( 4300 yen )

Basing on the key words we have, we proceed with the analysis as follows:

There are a total of 5 tickets needed to buy including 3 adults and 2 children. (大人3人、子ども2人 )

Adult : The one over 65 (1人は65歳以上) is the elder  ( シニア) so he will be discounted 20% (2割引き) on the total amount for an adult 1000 yen =>  two adults ( 2000 yen) + one elder (800 yen)  = 2800 yen

Chidren: There are 2 children: one 13, one 8. The 8-year-old child will be charge children’s fee, half price (半額の500円) is 500 yen. The 13 year-old-child will be still charged adult’s fee, because Children’s fee is applied to primary school students (子ども料金は小学生まで  – 10 years old ) . Fee is 1000 yen. We have 500 + 1000 = 1500 yen.

The total amount of money a man must pay for 5 people is: 2800 + 1500 = 4300 yen ( anwser 3 )
