3. Grammar
N があります/わかります
Meaning: have something / understand something
Usage: the particle [が] goes with the verbs [あ り ま す ／ わ か り ま す] to indicate the object of action
[あ り ま す] means to have something or to own something. This verb is used with objects and is not used for humans and animals
Example:
私(わたし)は本(ほん)があります。
watashi wa hon ga arimasu.
I have book.
わたしはあたらしいかばんがあります。
watashi wa atarashii kaban ga arimasu.
I have a new bag.
わたしは にほんごがわかります。
watashi wa nihongo ga wakarimasu.
I understand Japanese.
Nが好き(すき)です/きらいです/じょうずです/下手です。
Meaning: like / hate / good at/ bad at something
Usage: The particle [が] goes with emotional and gradable adjectives.
Ẽample:
私(わたし)は音楽(おんがく)が好き(すき)です。
watashi ha ongaku ga suki desu.
I like music.
わたしのともだちはぶたにくがきらいです。
watashi no tomodachi wa futaniku ga kirai desu.
My friend does not like pork
わたしはにほんご がへたです。
watashi wa nihongo ga heta desu.
I am not good at Japanese.
どんな + N
Usage: Used to ask about a specific name or something in a large category.
Example:
どんな言語(げんご)がすきですか。
Donna gengo ga suki desuka.
Which language do you like?
日本語(にほんご)がすきです。
Nihongo ga suki desu.
I like Japanese.
どんな のみものがすきですか。
Donna nomimono ga suki desuka.
What kind of drinks do you like?
ジュースがすきです。
Juusu ga sukidesu.
I like juice.
よく/だいたい/たくさん/すこし/ ぜんぜん。
よく/ だいたい/ すこし/ あまり/ ぜんぜん。
These are adverbs which are placed before verbs/adjectives to indicate their degree of subtance .
よく (used with affirmative form): very, well, nicely
だいたい (used with affirmative form): about, approximately
すこし (used with affirmative form): a little
あまり (used with negative form): a little, not really
ぜんぜん (used with negative form): absolutely not, not at all
Example:
よく わかります : understand well
だいたい わかります : roughly understand
すこし わかります : understand a little
あまり わかりません : do not really undersand
ぜんぜん わかりません : do not understand at all
たくさん/ すこし/ あまり/ ぜんぜん
Adverbs which are placed before verbs/adjectives to indicate their degree of quantity
Example:
たくさん あります : have a lot
すこし あります : have a little
あまり ありません : not much
ぜんぜん ありません : not at all
英語(えいご)がよくわかります。
eigo ga yoku wakarimasu.
I understand English well.
英語(えいご)があまりわかりません
Eigo ga amari wakarimasen.
I don’t understand English very much.
ぶんぽうが あまりわかりません。
bunpou ga amari wakarimasen.
I don’t know much grammar.
sentence 1 から sentence 2
Meaning: because
Usage: used to connect two sentences, sentence 1 describe the reason for sentence 2
Example:
時間(じかん)がありませんから、本(ほん)を読み(よみ)ません。
Jikan ga arimasen kara, hon wo yomi masen.
Because I don’t have time, I don’t read books.
You can also say sentence 2 first, then say sentence 1 later with [か ら] at the end of sentence 1
まいあさしんぶんをよみますか？
Mai asa shinbun wo yomi masuka?
Do you read the newspaper every morning?
いいえ、よみません。じかんがありませんから。
Iie, yomimasen. Jikan ga arimasen kara.
No, I don’t. Because I don’t have time.
どうして
Meaning: Why
Usage: Used to ask the reason, and when answering, we add [か ら] at the end of the sentence
Example:
どうしてきょう は はやく かえりますか ?
Doushite kyou wa hayaku kaerimasuka?
Why are you going home early today?
ようじがありますから。
Youji ga arimasukara.
Because there is a business./Because I have things to do.
4. Kaiwa

Zannen desu
ミラー：もしもし、ミラーです。
Miraa : Moshimoshi, Miraa desu.
木村 : ああ、ミラーさん、こんばんは。お元気ですか。
Kimura : Aa, Miraa san, konbanwa. Ogenki desuka?
ミラー：ええ、元気です。あのう、木村さん、小沢征爾のコンサート、いっしょにいかがですか。
Miraa : Ee, genkidesu. Anou, Kimura-san, Ozawa Seiji no konsaato, issho ni ikagadesu ka.
木村 : いいですね。いつですか。
Kimura : Ii desune. Itsu desuka?
ミラー：来週の金曜日の晩です。
Miraa : Raishuu no kinyoubi no bandesu.
木村 : 金曜日ですか。金曜日の晩はちょっと･･････。
Kimura : Kinyoubidesu ka. Kinyoubi no ban wa chotto…
ミラー：だめですか。
Miraa : Dame desuka?
木村 : ええ、友達と約束がありますから、･･････。
Kimura : Ee, tomodachi to yakusoku ga arimasukara…
ミラー：そうですか。残念ですね。
Miraa : Soudesune. Zannen desune.
木村 : ええ。また今度お願いします。
Kimura : Ee. Mata kondo onegaishimasu.
Translation
What a pity
Miller: Hello, I’m Miller.
Kimura: Mr. Miller, good evening. How are you?
Miller: Yes, I’m fine.
Well, Mr. Kimura, would you like to go to Seiji Ozawa’s concert with me?
Kimura: Sounds good! When will we go?
Miller: Next Friday night.
Kimura: Friday?
Friday night is quite …
Miller: Is it alright?
Kimura: Because I have an appointment with my friend ….
Miller: Is that so. What a pity
Kimura: Yeah. See you next time.
