3. Grammar

Vる/ V た/ V ない/ Adj/ Nの +
場合は、~

Meaning : in case ~

Usage : used to give a hypothetical situation.

Example :

行けない場合は、連絡してください。
Ikenai baai wa, renraku shite kudasai.
In case you can not go, please contact me.

いそがしい場合は、行けない。
Isogashii baai wa, ikenai.
In case of being busy, I can not go.

調子が悪い場合は、やすんだほうがいいです。
Choushi ga warui baai wa, yasunda hou ga ii desu.
In case of bad health, you should stop.

V/ Adj/ N な (plain form) のに、

Meaning : although ~ (The second clause in the sentence expresses the opposite things of what is mentioned in the first clause)

Example :

約束したのに、彼女は来ない。
Yakusoku shita noni, kanojo wa konai.
Although she promised, she didn’t come.

この問題は難しいのに、してみています。
Kono mondai wa muzukashii noni, shite mite imasu.
Although this problem is difficult, just try resolving it.

きょうは日曜日なのに、働かなければなりません。
Kyou wa nichiyoubi na noni, hatarakanakereba narimasen.
Though today is Sunday, I have to work.

4. Kaiwa

一生懸命 練習したのに

係員:皆さん、この マラソンは 健康マラソンですから、無理を しないで ください。もし 気分が 悪く なったら、係員に 言って ください。
Kakariin: Minasan, kono marason wa kenkou marason desukara, muri o shinaide kudasai. Moshi kibun ga waruku nattara, kakariin ni itte kudasai.

参加者:はい。
Sankasha: Hai.

係員:コースを まちがえた 場合は、元の 所に 戻って 続けて ください。
Kakariin: Koosu o machigaeta baai wa, moto no tokoro ni modotte tsudzukete kudasai.

参加者:あのう、途中で やめたい 場合は、どう したら いいですか?
Sankasha: Anou, tochuu de yametai baai wa, dou shitara ii desuka?

係員:その 場合は、近くの 係員に 名前を 言ってから、帰って ください。では、スタートの 時間です。
Kakariin: So no baai wa, chikaku no kakariin ni namae o itte kara, kaette kudasai. Dewa, sutaato no jikan desu.

鈴木:ミラーさん、マラソンは どうでしたか。
Suzuki: Miraa-san, marason wa doudeshitaka.

ミラー:2位でした。
Miraa: 2-i deshita.

鈴木:2位だったんですか。すごいですね。
Suzuki: 2-i dattan desuka. Sugoi desu ne.

ミラー:いいえ、一生懸命 練習したのに、優勝できなくて、残念です。
Miraa: Iie, isshoukenmei renshuu shita no ni, yuushou dekinakute, zannen desu.

鈴木:また 来年が ありますよ。
Suzuki: Mata rainen ga arimasu yo.

Translation :

Though I practiced very hard

Attendant: Everybody, this marathon race is for your health. So don’t overdo it, please. If you feel sick, please tell an attendant near you.

Participants: OK.

Attendant: In case you go the wrong way, go back to the last point on the correct route and resume running.

Participants: Excuse me. If I want to quit, what should I do?

Attendant: In that case, please give your name to the nearest attendant and leave. Now it’s time to start.

Suzuki: Mr. Miller, how was the marathon race?

Miller: I got the second prize.

Suzuki: The second? That’s great!

Miller: Oh, no. Considering I practiced as hard as I could, it’s disappointing that I couldn’t win.

Suzuki: You will have another chance next year.
