3. Grammar
V (dictionary form) / N の＋ために、~~
Meaning : to ~, because ~, for ~
Usage : indicates a purpose.
Example :
健康のために、毎朝ご飯を食べます。
Kenkou no tame ni, maiasa gohan o tabemasu.
For our health, I have breakfast every morning.
V (dictionary form) / N のに、～
Usage : indicates a purpose. Usually used with つかう、いい、べんりだ、やくに たつ、［じかんが］かかる…
Example :
このはさみは花を切るのに、使います。
Kono hasami wa hana o kiru no ni, tsukaimasu.
This scissor is used to cut flower.
Quantifier は
Usage : indicates the minimum amount that the speaker estimates.
Example :
日本で結婚式をするのに、200万円は必要です。
Nihon de kekkonshiki o suru no ni, 200 man-en wa hitsuyou desu.
To hold a wedding party in Japan, we need 2 million yens.
Classifier も
Usage : expresses very large amount of something,
Example :
駅まで行くのに３時間もかかります。
Eki made iku no ni 3 jikan mo kakarimasu.
It takes as long as 3 hours to travel to the station.

ボーナスは 何に 使いますか
鈴木：林さん、ボーナスは いつ 出るんですか。
Suzuki: Hayashi-san, boonasu wa itsu derun desuka.
林：来週です。鈴木さんの 会社は？
Hayashi: Raishuu desu. Suzuki-san no kaisha wa?
鈴木：あしたです。楽しみですね。まず 車の ローンを 払って、ゴルフセットを 買って、それから 旅行に 行って・・・。
Suzuki: Ashita desu. Tanoshimi desune. Mazu kuruma no roon o haratte, gorufu setto o katte, sorekara ryokou ni itte…
小川：貯金は しないんですか。
Ogawa: Chokin wa shinain desuka.
鈴木：貯金ですか。僕は あまり 考えた こと、ありませんね。
Suzuki: Chokin desuka. Boku wa amari kangaeta koto, arimasenne.
林：わたしは ロンドンへ 旅行に 行ったら、あとは 貯金します。
Hayashi: Watashi wa Rondon e ryokou ni ittara, ato wa chokin shimasu.
鈴木：結婚の ために、貯金するんですか。
Suzuki: Kekkon no tame ni, chokin surun desuka.
林：いいえ。いつか イギリスへ 留学しようと 思って いるんです。
Hayashi: Iie. Itsuka Igirisu e ryuugaku shiyou to omotte irun desu.
小川：へえ、独身の 人は いいですね。全部 自分の ために、使えて。わたしは うちの ローンを 払って、子どもの 教育の ために、貯金したら、ほとんど 残りませんよ。
Ogawa: Hee, dokushin no hito wa ii desune. Zenbu jibun no tame ni, tsukaete. Watashi wa uchi no roon o haratte, kodomo no kyouiku no tame ni, chokin shitara, hotondo nokorimasen yo.
Translation :
What will you spend your bonus on?
Suzuki: Ms. Hayashi, when will your bonus be paid?
Hayashi: Next week. What about your company?
Suzuki: Tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it. Are you? First of all, I’ll pay the loan on the car, and buy a golf set, then go on a trip…
Ogawa: Won’t you save any?
Suzuki: Save? I’ve hardly thought of that.
Hayashi: I’ll save some after going on a trip to London.
Suzuki: Are you saving money to get married?
Hayashi: No. I think I’m going to study in Britain some day.
Ogawa: Oh, I really envy single people. You can spend your whole bonus on yourself. I must pay the loan on the house, and after setting aside a lot for my children’s education expenses, there is hardly anything left.
