6. Mondai

To do the “Mondai” section, you need “minna no nihongo” book and audios for listening

Exercise 1: Listen and answer questions

With this exercise, first you need to listen to the question and write down what you have listened and then answer the question according to your own understanding. You should not try to focus on clearly listening to each word of a sentence then missing the following sentences. You should listen it for the first time, answer the questions one by one, with the questions you can’t listen then listening to them the second time. After that, you can listen again and copy the words to improve your listening skill and remember words better. Finally, after listening and answering all questions, you can refer to the translation and the answer below.

Translation :

1.  日本語を勉強するとき、試験があったほうがいいと思いますか。
nihongo wo benkyou suru toki, shiken ga atta hou ga ii to omoi masu ka.
Do you think it would be better to have exams when studying Japanese?

2. かぜをひいたんですが、薬を飲んだほうがいいですか。
kaze wo hii ta n desu ga, kusuri o non da hou ga ii desu ka.
I caught a cold, should I take medicine?

3. あなたの国では、これから日本語を勉強するひとは多くなるでしょうか。
anata no kuni de ha, korekara nihongo wo benkyou suru hito ha ooku naru desho u ka.
In your country, do you think there will be more people studying Japanese from now on?

Answer :

1. あった ほうが いい と 思います。
Atta houga ii to omoimasu
I think it would be better to have exams.

2. いいえ、かぜの 薬は 飲まない ほうがいいです。
Iie, kaze no kusuriha nomanai houga ii desu
No, you shouldn’t take cold medicine

3. おおく なるでしょう
ooku narudeshou
Yes, I think there will be more people.

Exercise 2: Listen and choose true or false

With this exercise, the listeners will listen to the conversation, then there will be a key point about the problem that will be raised in the conversation. The listeners must choose whether the content is true or false according to what they has listened. If it is true, select 〇 (maru) and if it is false, choose ✖ (batsu). In this listening section, you should pay attention to the concluding sentence to see whether that sentence is given in a positive or negative form in order to avoid being “tricked” when listening.

女: 田中さん、きょうは 英語教室ですね
Mr. Tanaka, there is an English class today, right?

男: そうなんですが、実は 昨日の晩から 少し 熱が あるんです。
That’s right, but actually I have had a slight fever since yesterday evening.

女: じゃ、早く 帰って、 ゆっくり 休んだ ほうがいい ですね。
Well, you should go home early and take a rest.

男:ええ、そうします。
Yes, I will.

Exercise 3: Give the true form of the verb

ちょっと 頭が 痛いんです。

……じゃ、ゆっくり(休んだ) ほうがいい ですよ。

1. きのうから 熱が あるんですよ。
…..あまり 無理は (   )ほうがいい ですよ。

Answer and translation
きのうから 熱が あるんですよ。…..あまり 無理は ( しない )ほうがいい ですよ。I had a fever since yesterday. You shouldn’t work too hard.

2. 連休に 九州へ 行きたいんですが。
…..じゃ、早く ホテルを (   )ほうがいい ですよ。

Answer and translation
連休に 九州へ 行きたいんですが。…..じゃ、早く ホテルを ( 予約した )ほうがいい ですよ。I want to go to Kyushu for consecutive holidays. So you should reserve the hotel early.

3. おなかの 調子が よくないんです。
…..じゃ、冷たいものは (   )ほうがいい ですよ。

Answer and translation
おなかの 調子が よくないんです。…..じゃ、冷たいものは ( 食べない/飲まない )ほうがいい ですよ。My stomach is not good. Well, you shouldn’t eat/drink cold things.

4. あした 大学の 入学試験んです。
…..じゃ、今晩は 早く(   )ほうがいい ですよ。

Answer and translation
あした 大学の 入学試験んです。…..じゃ、今晩は 早く ( 寝た )ほうがいい ですよ。There will be a university entrance examination tomorrow. Well, you should go to bed early tonight.

Exercise 4: Give the true form of word

あしたは たぶん ( 雨・雨だ・雨の )でしょう。

→ あしたは たぶん ( 雨 ) でしょう。
Maybe it will rain tomorrow.

1. ミラーさんは とても ( まじめ・まじめだ・まじめです )と 思って います。

Answer and translation
ミラーさんは とても ( まじめだ )と 思って います。 I think Mr. Miller is very serious.

2. これから だんだん 寒く ( なる・なった・なって )でしょう。

Answer and translation
これから だんだん 寒く ( なる )でしょう。I think it will be gradually getting colder from now on.

3. 田中さんは ( 会議室・会議室だ・会議室で )かもしれない

Answer and translation
田中さんは ( 会議室で )かもしれない。Mr. Tanaka might be in the conference room.

4. きょうは ( 残業しなければなりません・残業しなければならない・残業しなければならなくて )かも しれません。

Answer and translation
きょうは ( 残業しなければならない )かも しれません。Maybe I have to work overtime today.

Exercise 6: Read the following paragraph and answer the questions

 

(1) 新しい 仕事を 始めると、いいです。

(2) 宝くじを 買うと、お金持ちに なるかもしれません。

(3) スポーツを すると、足に けがを してしまいますから、スポーツを しない ほうが いいでしょう。

(4) 恋人と コンサートや 展覧会に 行った ほうが いいです。
