3. Grammar
N/ Vることができます。
Meaning: can do something
Usage:
The nouns that are used must be action nouns or nouns denoting ability such as: 日本語(にほんご)、ピアノ、スキー
We must add こと after verb in dictionary form to turn it into a noun.
The verb [できます] means: proficiency, ability.
Example:
にほんごができます。
Nihongo ga dekimasu.
I can speak Japanese.
えをかくことができます。
E o kaku koto ga dekiru.
I can draw a picture. (proficiency)
カードではらうことが できます。
Kaado de harau koto ga dekiru.
Can pay by card. (ability)
わたしの趣味（しゅみ）は N/ Vることです。
Meaning : My hobby is~
Usage: Use nouns and verbs in dictionary form, add [こと] to talk about hobby.
To ask about someone’s hobby, we use : Nのしゅみはなんですか? (What is N’s hobby?)
Example:
あなたのしゅみはなんですか。
Anata no shumi wa nandesuka.
What is your hobby?
りょこうです。
Ryokoudesu.
My hobby is travelling.
わたしのしゅみはえいがをみることです。
Watashi no shumi wa eiga o mirukoto desu.
My hobby is watching movie.
私の趣味は音楽です。
Watashi no shumi wa ongaku desu.
My hobby is music.
私の趣味は音楽を聞くことです。
Watashi no shumi wa ongaku o kiku kotodesu.
My hobby is listening to music.
V1る/ N の/ word expressing time + まえに＋ V2
Meaning: Before doing V1, do V2
Example :
寝る前に、本をよみます
Neru maeni, hon o yomimasu.
Before going to bed, I read book.
ねるまえにみずをのみます。
Neru maeni nomimasu.
I drink water before going to bed.
かいぎのまえにレポートをじゅんびしました。
Kaigi no maeni repotto o junbishimashita.
I prepared a report before the meeting.
なかなか + verb in negative form
Meaning : not easy to do something…
Example:
バスが なかなか きません。
Basu ga nakanaka kimasen.
I can not catch the bus.
ハノイでなかなかゆきをみることができません。
Hanoi de nakanaka yuki o mirukoto ga dekimasen.
I can not easily see snow in Hanoi.
ぜひ
Meaning : certainly, without fail
Usage : Use to ask, demand to express strong desire
Example :
ぜひにほんへいきたいです。
Zehi nihon e ikitai desu.
I really want to go to Japan.
ぜひあそびにきてください。
Zehi asobini kitekudasai.
Please come to see us!
4. Kaiwa
趣味は何ですか
Shumi wa nandesuka?
山田：サントスさんの趣味は何ですか。
Yamada: Santosu san no shumi wa nandesuka?
サントス：写真です。
Santosu: Shashindesu
山田：どんな写真を撮りますか。
Yamada: Donna shashin o torimasu ka.
サントス：動物の写真です。特に馬が好きです。
Santosu: Doubutsu no shashindesu. Tokuni uma ga sukidesu.
山田：へえ、それはおもしろいですね。日本へ来てから、馬の写真を撮りましたか。
Yamada: Hee, sore wa omoshiroidesu ne. Nihon e kite kara,uma no shashin o torimashita ka.
サントス：いいえ。日本ではなかなか馬を見ることができません。
Santosu: Iie. Nihonde wa nakanaka uma o miru koto ga dekimasen.
山田：北海道に馬の牧場がたくさんありますよ。
Yamada: Hokkaidou ni uma no bokuju ga takusan arimasu yo.
サントス：ほんとうですか。じゃ、夏休みにぜひ行きたいです。
Sanosu: Hontoudesuka. Ja, natsuyasumi ni zehi ikitaidesu.
Translation:
What is your hobby?
Yamada: Mr. Santos, what is your hobby?
Santos: It is taking pictures.
Yamada: What kind of picture do you take?
Santos: Animal’s picture. I especially like horses.
Yamada: Oh, that’s interesting.
Did you take pictures of horses after you came to Japan?
Santos: No. I can not easily see horses in Japan.
Yamada: There are many horse farms in Hokkaido.
Santos: Really? Well, I really want to go there on summer vacation.
