Learn minna no nihongo lesson 17
3. Grammar
ない-form of verb:
Group I: い becomes あ. If its ending sound is い, it will become わ and then add ない
Example:
かきます -> かかない
およぎます -> およがない
のみます -> のまない
あそびます -> あそばない
まちます -> またない
とります -> とらない
あいます -> あわない
はなします -> はなさない
Group II: remove ます + ない
Example:
たべます -> たべない
いれます -> いれない
Group III: します becomes しない
きます -> こない
べんきょうします -> べんきょうしない
Vないでください。
Meaning : don’t do something
Usage : Use to advise or ask someone not to do something
~Vないでください is a softer way to ask than Vてはいけません。
Example :
わたしはげんきですから、しんぱいしないでください。
Watashi wa genki desukara, shinpaisinai dekudasai.
I am fine, so don’t worry.
ここでしゃしんをとらないでください.
Koko de shashin o toranaidekudasai.
Please do not take photos here.
Vない remove ない +なければなりません
Meaning : have to do something
Usage: use to describe an action as an obligation, regardless of the listener’s wish.
Example :
くすりをのまなければなりません。
Kusuri o nomanakereba narimasen.
I have to take medicine
まいにちにほんごをべんきょうしなければなりません。
Mainichi nihongo o benkyoushi nakerebanarimasen.
I have to study Japanese everyday.
Vない remove い+ くてもいいです。
Meaning : No need to do something, don’t have to do something
Usage : denoting the unnecessary behavior.
Example :
明日こなくてもいいです。
Ashita konakutemo iidesu.
It’s ok if you don’t come tomorrow.
どようびのごごべんきょうしなくてもいいですか。
Doyoubi no gobenkyoushinakutemo iidesuka.
May I not study on Saturday afternoon?
N ( time)までに + V
Meaning : need to do something before a time
Usage : Action or work must be conducted before the time that is determined by [までに]
[までに] is different from [まで] and [に]
Example:
かいぎは5じまでにおわります。
Kaigi wa go ji madeni owarimasu.
The meeting will end before 5pm.
どようびまでにほんをかえさなければなりません。
Doyoubi madeni hon o kaesanakerebanarimasen.
I have to return the books before Saturday.
N (object) は
We use は instead of を to express topic of the sentence
Example :
ここににもつをおかないでください。
Koko ni nimotsu o okanaide kudasai.
Please do not leave your luggage here.
->にもつはここにおかないでください。
Nimotsu wa koko ni okanaide kudasai.
Please do not leave your luggage here.
お茶は飲みませんか。
Ocha wa nomimasenka?
Would you like some tea?
4. Kaiwa
どうしましたか
Doushimashitaka
医者:どうしましたか。
Isha: Doushimashitaka?
松本:きのうからのどが痛くて、熱も少しあります。
Matsumoto: Kinou kara nodo ga itakute, netsu mo sukoshi arimasu.
医者:そうですか。 ちょっと口を開けてください。
Isha: Soudesu ka. Chotto kuchi o akete kudasai.
医者:かぜですね。ゆっくり休んでください。
Isha: Kaze desune. Yukkuri yasunde kudasai.
松本:あのう、あしたから東京へ出張しなければなりません。
Matsumoto: Anou, ashita kara Tokyo e shutchou shinakereba narimasen.
医者:じゃ、薬を飲んで、きょうは早く寝てください。
Isha: Ja, kusuri o nonde, kyou wa hayaku nete kudasai.
松本:はい。
Matsumoto: Hai.
医者:それから今晩はおふろに入らないでください。
Isha: Sorekara konban wa o furo ni hairanaide kudasai.
松本:はい。わかりました。
Matsumoto: Hai. Wakarimashita.
医者:じゃ、お大事に。
Isha: Ja, odaijini.
松本:どうもありがとうございました。
Matsumoto: Domo arigatougozaimashita.
Translation
What’s wrong?
Doctor: What’s wrong?
Matsumoto: I have a sore throat since yesterday and I have a little fever.
Doctor: Is that so. Please open your mouth a little.

Doctor: It’s a cold. Take a rest for now.
Matsumoto: Well, I have to go on a business trip to Tokyo from tomorrow.
Doctor: Then please take your medicine and go to bed early today.
Matsumoto: Yes.
Doctor: And please do not take a bath tonight.
Matsumoto: Yes, I got it.
Doctor: Take care of yourself.
Matsumoto: Thank you very much.
