3. Grammar
Verb group:
Based on the conjugation, Japanese verbs are divided into three groups:
Group I: V imasu
The last syllable of the verbs in this group that are in form of [ます] are in the column of [い]
Example:
かきます
のみます
Group II: V emasu
The last syllable of most verbs in this group that are in form of [ます] are in the column of [え]
Example:
たべます
みせます
Sometimes there are also some verbs that have the last syllable are in the column of [い]
Example:
みます
おきます
Group III:
します
きます
Verb in short form (be also called dictionary form):
How to conjugate:
Group I: imasu (remove masu), i ⇒ u
Example:
かきます -> かく
のみます -> のむ
Group II: emasu ( remove masu) + ru
Example:
たべますー＞たべる
みせますー＞みせる
Group III:
します ⇒ する
きます⇒ くる
て form:
The verbs that end with て、で are called verbs て-form. The conjugation of て-form is based on the verb groups
Group I: when verb ends in:
+ う つ る: remove う つ る ＋って
Example:
まつ ー＞ まって
とる ー＞ とって
あう ー＞ あって
＋ぶ ぬ む: remove ぶ ぬ む ＋んで
あそぶ －＞ あそんで
のむ －＞ のんで
＋ す: remove す ＋して
はなす －＞ はなして
＋ く: remove く ＋いて
きく －＞ かいて
＋ ぐ: remove ぐ ＋いで
およぐ －＞ およいで
Group II: Vru remove る ＋て
たべる ー＞ たべて
ねる ー＞ ねて
Group III:
する ⇒ して
くる ⇒ きて
Vてください
Meaning: Please do something
Usage: Use to politely ask someone to do something.
It often goes with すみませんが to ask politely. In this case, が is used to connect the sentences.
In informal communication, we will hear すいません instead of すみません
Example:
この字を読んでください
Kono ji wo yonde kudasai.
Please read this letter.
ちょっとまってください。
Chotto matte kudasai.
Please wait for a moment.
くすりをのんでください。
Kusuri o nonde kudasai
Please take medicine.
Vています
Meaning: doing something
Usage: Use to describe an action that is taking place at the time of speaking.
It often goes with 今 (now)
Example:
今電話をかけています
Ima denwa o kaketeimasu.
I’m calling now.
いまあなたはなにをしていますか。
Ima anata wa nani o shiteimasuka?
What are you doing now?
わたしはえいがをみています。
Watashi wa eiga o miteimasu.
I’m watching movies.
Vましょうか
Meaning: Shall I…?
Usage: ask to do something for someone
How to conjugate: Vます remove ます and add ましょうか
Example:
傘を貸しましょうか。
Kasa o kashimashouka.
Shall I lend my umbrella to you?
おねがいします。
Onegaishimasu.
Yes, please.
でんきをけしましょうか。
denki o keshimashouka.
Shall I turn off the light?
いいえ、けっこうです。
Iie, kekkoudesu.
No, thank you.
NがVている
Usage : describe a natural phenomenon
Example:
雨が降っています
Ame ga futteimasu.
It’s raining
Sentence 1 が Sentence
Usage : We have learned about the particle [が] in lesson 8. However, when we use [が] in [すみませんが], [しつれしますが] , this particle is just used to connect two sentences or to make the sentence less hard (make it softer, easier to be received).
Example :
しつれしますが、おなまえは？
Shitsureshimasuga, onamaewa?
Excuse me, what is your name?
すみませんが、しおをとってください。
Sumimasenga, shio o tottekudasai.
Excuse me, please give me the salt.
4. Kaiwa
梅田まで行ってください
Umeda made ittekudasai
カリナ: 梅田までお願いします。
Karina: Umeda made onegaishimasu.
運転手: はい。
Untenshu: Hai.
カリナ: すみません。 あの信号を右へ曲がってください。
Karina: Sumimasen. Ano shingou o migi e magatte kudasai.
運転手: 右ですね。
Untenshu: Migidesune.
カリナ: ええ。
Karina: Ee
運転手: まっすぐですか。
Untenshu: Massugudesuka?
カリナ: ええ、まっすぐ行ってください。
Karina: Ee, massugu itte kudasai.
カリナ: あの花屋の前で止めてください。
Karina: Ano hanaya no mae de tomete kudasai.
運転手: はい。 1,800円です。
Untenshu: Hai. 1,800 yen desu.
カリナ: これでお願いします。
Karina: Korede onegaishimasu.
運転手: 3,200円のお釣りです。ありがとうございました。
Untenshu: 3, 200-En no otsuridesu. Arigatou gozaimashita.
Translation:
Take me to Umeda, please.
Karina: Take me to Umeda, please
Driver: Yes

Karina: Excuse me. Please turn right at that traffic light.
Driver: Turn right, right?
Karina: Yes.
