Tense of Japanese nouns and adjectives
Noun:
N | Past | Present and Future |
Positive | N + でした。 | N +です |
Negative | N + じゃ(では)ありませんでした | N + じゃ(では)ありません |

Positive | Adj な ( take off な) + でした。 | Adj な ( take off な) + です |

A い

Positive | Adj い (take off い)+かったです。 | Adj い (keep い) +です |
Negative | Adj い ( take off い) +くなかったです。 | Adj い (take off い) +くない |
Note: いい’s past tense are よかった and よくなかった.
Example:
きのうはあめでした。
Kinou wa ame deshita.
It rained yesterday.
きのうの試験は簡単ではありませんでした
Kinou no shiken wa kantan dewa arimasen deshita.
The test yesterday wasn’t easy.
せんしゅう わたしは ひま じゃ(では)ありませんでした。
Senshuu watashi wa hima dewa arimasen deshita.
I was not free last week.
きのうは暑かったです。
Kinou wa atsukatta desu.
It was hot yesterday.
きのうは暑くなかったです。
Kinou wa atsukunakatta desu.
It was not hot yesterday.
N1 はN2より Adj です。(N1, N2 are nouns)
Meaning : N1 is (adj) than/more (adj) than N2
Usage: Comparision that use N2 as a standard to
talk about N1.
Example:
この車はあの車より大きいです。
Kono kuruma wa ano kuruma yori ookii desu.
This car is bigger than that car.
このかばんはそのかばんよりきれいです。
Kono kaban wa sono kaban yori kirei desu.
This bag is more beautiful than that bag.
りんごはバナナよりたかいです。
Ringo wa banana yori takai desu.
Apple is more expensive than banana.
N1とN2はどちらがAdjです。
Meaning : Between N1 and N2, which one… ? (N1, N2 are nouns.)
Usage : [どちら] is used to ask the listener about choice between N1 and N2
How to answer : N1 (N2) のほうが adj です (N1 (N2) … than/more than the other one) or どちらも + adj + です (both…)
Example:
春と夏とどちらがすきですか。
Haru to natsu wa dochira ga suki desuka?
Which do you prefer, spring or summer?
春のほうがすきです。
Haru no houga sukidesu.
I prefer spring to summer.
ほんと えいがと どちらが おもしろいですか。
Hon to eiga wa dochira ga omoshiroi desuka.
Which is more interesting, books or movies ?
どちらもおもしろいです。
Dochira mo omoshiroi desu.
Both are interesting.
N1[の中]で何/どこ/だれ/いつが一番+ Adj ですか。
Meaning : In the area of N1, what/ where/ who/ when … is the most ?
Usage : Used to ask the listener to choose the object that is the superlative one.
How to answer: …N2 が一番 Adj です。
Example:
ベトナムで どこが いちばん きれいですか。
Betonamu de doko ga ichiban kirei desuka?
In Vietnam, which place is the most beautiful place?
ハノイが いちばんきれいです。
Hanoi ga ichiban kirei desu.
Hanoi is the most beautiful place.
4. Kaiwa
お祭りはどうでしたか
Omatsuri wa doudeshita ka
ミラー : ただいま。
Mira : Tadaima.
管理人 : お帰りなさい。
Kanrinin : Okaerinasai
ミラー : これ、京都のお土産です。
Mira : Kore, Kyouto no omiyagedesu.
管理人 : どうもすみません。祇園祭はどうでしたか。
Kanrinin: Doumo sumimasen. Gionmatsuri wa doudeshita ka.
ミラー : とてもおもしろかったです。外国人も多かったですよ。
Mira : Totemo omoshirokattadesu. Gaikoku jin mo ookattadesu yo.
管理人 : 祇園祭は京都の祭りでいちばん有名ですからね。
Kanrinin : Gionmatsuri wa Kyouto no matsuri de ichiban yuumeidesukara ne.
ミラー : そうですか。
Mira : Soudesuka.
管理人 : 写真を撮りましたか。
Kanrinin : Shashin o torimashita ka.
ミラー : ええ、100枚ぐらい撮りました。
Mira : Ee, 100-mai gurai torimashita.
管理人 : すごいですね。
Kanrinin : Sugoidesune.
ミラー : ええ。でも、ちょっと疲れました。
Mira : Ee. Demo, chotto tsukaremashita.
Translation:
How was the festival?
Miller: I’m home.
Manager: Welcome back.
Miller: This is a gift from Kyouto.
Manager: Thank you very much. How was the Gion Festival?
Miller: It was very interesting. There were also many foreigners.
Manager: Because the Gion festival is the most famous festival in Kyoto festivals.
Miller: Is that so?
Manager: Did you take photos?
Miller: Yes. I took about 100 photos.
Manager: That’s great.
Miller: Yeah. But I was a little tired.
