3. Grammar
Nがあります/います。
Meaning: to be, to exist
Usage: To say about someone’s/something’s/animal’s existence
あります：is, is at, is in (used for object)
います ：is, is at, is in (for human and animal)
Example:
さくらがあります。
Sakura ga arimasu.
There are cherry blossoms.
いぬがいます。
Inu ga imasu.
There’s a dog.
Note: When saying about the existence of somethings or someone at certain locations we use the structure:
” Place にNがあります/います。”
Example:
つくえのうえにほんがあります。
Tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.
There is a book on the desk
N1 (place)にN2があります/います。
Meaning: at/ in N1, there is N2. Used to describe the existence of something or someone at a location
Example:
部屋(へや)に机(つくえ)があります。
Heya ni tsukue ga arimasu.
In the room, there are tables.
部屋(へや)に木村(きむら)さんがいます。
Heya ni Kimura san ga imasu.
In the room, there is Mr./Ms. Kimura.
N1はN2 ( place)にあります/います
Mean: N1 is at/in N2
Usage: N1 is the place where N2 is existing. N1 is determined by the particle [に]
Example:
東京(とうきょう)はちばけんにあります。
Toukyou wa chiba ken ni arimasu.
Tokyo is in Chiba province.
木村(きむら)さんは事務所(じむしょ)にいます。
Kimura san wa jimusho ni imasu.
Mr/Ms. Kimura is in office.
In order to ask if there is anyone / something at a place, we use the structure:
“N1(place) に + なに+ が ありますか / だれ+いますか”
Example:
にわに なにが ありますか。
Niwa ni nani ga arimasuka.
What’s in the yard?
さくらのきが あります。
Sakura no ki ga arimasu.
There is a cherry blossom tree.
きょうしつにだれが いますか。
Kyoushitsu ni dare ga imasuka.
Who is in the classroom?
ゆきさんが います。
Yuki san ga imasu.
There is Yuki.
N1 のN2 (position)に
Meaning: At N2 of N1 there is…
Usage: describe the potitions of N1 such as：うえ(on)、した(under)、まえ(in front of)、うしろ(behind)、あいだ(between)、そと(outside)、ひだり(left)、みぎ(right)、ちかく(near)、となり(beside, next to),…
Example:
机(つくえ)の上(うえ)に本(ほん)があります。
tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.
There are books on the table.
えきのまえに としょかん が あります。
Eki no maeni toshokan ga arimasu.
There is a library in front of the station.
N1 やN2
Meaning: N1 or N2
Usage: [や] used to connect nouns. Unlike [と] that used to list all nouns, [や] is only used to list 2 nouns that are symbolic. Apart from those 2 nouns, there are other nouns.
Example:
つくえのうえに ほん や ペンが あります。
Tsukue no ue ni hon ya pen ga arimasu.
On the table, there are books or pens (and other things)
わたしのかばんなかに でんわや さいふが あります。
Watashi no kabannakani denwa ya saifu ga arimasu.
In my bag, there are phone or wallet.
Note: We also have the structure “N1 や N2 や 。。。 な ど : “There are other similar things”, “etc”. For the last N we don’t use や but use な ど to finish the sentence. な ど is placed before the appropriate particles, corresponding to the verbs at the end of the sentence.
Example:
へやのなかにテレビやれいぞうこなどがあります。
Heya no naka ni terebi ya reizoko na do ga arimasu.
In the room, there are TV, refrigerator, etc.
Word/Phrase ですか
Usage: The particle [か] in this case is used to confirm something by the speaker.
Example:
A : すみません、ユニューやストア はどこですか？
Sumimasen, Yunyuuya sutoa wa doko desuka?
Excuse me, where is the Yunyuya store?
B : ユニューやストアですか？あのビルのなかです。
Yunyuya sutoa desuka? Ano biru no naka desu.
The Yunyuya store, right? It’s in that building.
Nはありませんか
It is ありませんか not ありますか, which is a polite question that the listeners can answer yes or no.
パソコンはありませんか。
Pankon wa arimasen ka?
Do you have a PC?
(It’s ok if you don’t have any)
4. Kaiwa
チリソースはありませんか
Chirisousu wa arimasen ka
ミラー : すみません。ユニューヤ・ストアはどこですか。
Miraa : Sumimasen. Yunyuuya sutoa wa dokodesu ka.
女の人 : ユニューヤ・ストアですか。あそこに白いビルがありますね。あのビルの中です。
Onanohito : Yunyuuya sutoa desuka?Asoko ni shiroi biru ga arimasu ne. Ano biru no nakadesu.
ミラー : そうですか。どうもすみません。
Miraa : Soudesuka. Doumo sumimasen.
女の人 : いいえ。
Onanohito : Iie.
ミラー : あのう、チリソースはありませんか。
Miraa : Anou, chirisousu wa arimasen ka.
店員 : はい 。右の奥にスパイス・コーナーがあります。チリソースは下から2段目です。
Tenin :Hai. Migi no oku ni supaisu kounaa ga arimasu. Chirisousu wa shita kara 2-dan-medesu.
ミラー : わかりました。どうも。
Miraa : Wakarimashita. Doumo.
Translation:
Is there chili sauce?
Miller: Excuse me, where is the Yunyuya store?
The woman: The Yunyuya store, right?
There is a white building over there.
It’s in that building.
Miller: Is that so. Thank you very much.
The woman: You’re welcome.

Miller: Well, is there chili sauce here?
Clerk: Yes, there is.
There is a spice corner in the right corner.
Chili sauce is on the second stage from the bottom.
Miller: Oh, I know. Thank you.
