JLPT N5 Grammar lesson 3. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce to you the JLPT N5 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Grammar structure 11 :

~だけ~

Formation :

~だけ~

Explanation :

Only…
There is nothing else apart from that.

Examples and examples’ meaning :

1.この写真(しゃしん)あなたにだけあげたよ。
I only give you this photo.

2.箱はこにりんごだけがある。
There are only apples in the box.

Grammar structure 12 :

~たことがある

Formation :

~Vた + ことがある
The conjugation of Vた is the same with the conjugation of Vて

Explanation :

Used to
Used to talk about experiences in the past or things happened in the past.

Examples and examples’ meaning :

1.盗(ぬす)んだことがある。
I used to steal.

2.彼(かれ)と会(あ)ったことがある。
I have met him.

Grammar structure 13 :

~たぶん~でしょう

Formation :

V (short form) + でしょう
N +でしょう
Aな ( minus な) +でしょう
Aい+ でしょう

Explanation :

Perhaps, maybe
Used when the speaker is sure about something more than 90%.

Examples and examples’ meaning :

1.明日(あした)は彼(かれ)はたぶん来(こ)ないでしょう。
He might not come tomorrow.

2.あのひとはたぶん歌手(かしゅ)だでしょう。
That person perhaps is a singer.

Grammar structure 14 :

~たり~たりする

Formation :

Vた+り,Vた+りする
For example,
行きます→行ったり
食べます→食べたり
来ます→来たり

Explanation :

Used to list out actions, doesn’t necessarily have to be arranged in order of time.

Examples and examples’ meaning :

1.遊部(ゆべ)本(ほん)を読(よ)んだり、テレビを見(み)たり、音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)いたりした。
Last night I read, watched the TV and listened to music.

2.今朝(けさ)学校(がっこう)へ来)き)たり、ともだちと会(あ)ったり、授業(じゅぎょう)に出(で)たりした。
This morning I went to school, met my friends and had classes.

Grammar structure 15 :

~で~

Formation :

~で~

Explanation :

To be, because, by, via.

– to describe where the action takes place or  to show reasons, how things are done.
Materials things are made of/from.
A period of time.

Examples and examples’ meaning :

1.毎日(まいにち)バスで学校(がっこう)へ行(い)きます。
I go to school by bus every day.

2.コンビニでケーキを買(か)う。
I buy cakes from a convenience store.

  • some transaltion are missing in the examples (i.e. example of grammar structure 6),
    and some other are WRONG (example of grammar structure 9: 行きます = I go (usually) and not I went).
    Very bad!!!

    A list of little grammar structures is indeed very helpful to study o/

    Just in the phrase 木の下に猫がいった, i think it translates to “There ‘was’ a cat under the tree”

    Just a little thing, in the grammar structure 1, example 2
    先生 の 英語 あもりがわからない
    Sensei no eigo a mori ga wakaranai means “i don’t understand the english teacher”
