Meaning and how to use :

Describe the meaning that is choosing this thing is better than other. Doing…/A  is better than the thing mentioned before.

For example

A:「自分で宿題をやることと塾に行くこととどっちがいい?」
B:「自分で宿題をやることの方がましだ」
A: jibun de shukudai o yaru koto to juku ni iku koto to docchi ga ii?’
B: ‘jibun de shukudai o yaru koto no hou ga mashi da’
A: “Which is better, self-study or extra class?”
B: “Sefl-study.”

今、雨をふっているから、外で遊ぶより、家でゲームをする方がましだ。
ima, ame o futte iru kara, soto de asobu yori, ie de gēmu o suru hou ga mashi da.
IT’s raining, so staying home playing game is better than go out.

信用ができないと思うので、彼らのサービスを使わない方がましだ。
shinyou ga deki nai to omou node, karera no sābisu o tsukawa nai hou ga mashi da.
We had better don’t use his sevices because I think it’s unreliable.

犯人は警察に捕まえられるより、自殺するほうがましだと思う。
hannin ha keisatsu ni tsukamaerareru yori, jisatsu suru hou ga mashi da to omou.
The criminal thinks that suiciding is better than being arrested.

怒るより固執するほうがましだ。
okoru yori koshitsu suru hou ga mashi da.
You should stay patient instead of angry.

Note: Sometimes used with “…くらい” to describe comparison’s object, “より” and “くらいなら” mean “this is the thing that the speaker consider not good”.
