Meaning and how to use :

To express the meaing of “thought that/thought this thing will turn out like this (in reality it’s the opposite) with the feeling of surprise, upset, regret, … of the speaker. Often used with opposite linking words to emphasize.

Examples:

1. 合格するはずだったが、結局不合格だ。
Goukaku suru hazu datta ga, kekkyoku fu goukaku da.
I thought for sure that I would pass, but turned out I failed.

2. 今、北海道に旅行しているはずだったが、予定がキャンセルされました。
Ima, hokkaidou ni ryokou shi te iru hazu datta ga, yotei ga kyanseru sare mashi ta.
I thought I would be at Hokkaido now but the plan is canceled.

3. はじめの計画では投資家のお金は新しいプロジェックトに使われるはずだったが、実際は借金を返されました。
Hajime no keikaku de ha toushi ka no okane ha atarashii purojekkuto ni tsukawareru hazu datta ga, jissai ha shakkin o kaesare mashi ta.
According to the first plan, the fundings are to be used for the new project but in reality it is used to pay the debts.

4. 今日散歩に行くはずだったけど、家を出たようとすると突然雨が降るから、家にいるしかたがない。
Kyou sanpo ni iku hazu datta kedo, ie o de ta you to suru to totsuzen ame ga furu kara, ie ni iru shikata ga nai.
I wanted to go for a walk today but it started raining so I had no way but to stay at home.

5. 日本のチームが勝つはずだったのに、何となくゴールキーパーが最後にうっかりして相手が得点を決まられた。
Nippon no chimu ga katsu hazu datta noni, nantonaku gorukipa ga saigo ni ukkari shi te aite ga tokuten o kimarare ta.
I thought for sure that Japan team would win but the goalie had his head in the cloud so the other team scored.
