Meaning and how to use :

1. Expresses the meaning “In a certain situation that N behaves”. The meanings between the preceding and the latter clause is rather loose.
How to use: Nにあって

Examples:

首相の職にあって、国民の需要を考えないで、いつも個人主張を出してはいけない。
Shushou no shoku ni atte, kokumin no juyou o kangae nai de, itsumo kojin shuchou o dashi te ha ike nai.
For a prime minister, to not put the people above himself is not good and always make personal claims is not good.

父は病状にあっては、だれも家族経済を支えられなくて、家族全員はとても困った。
Chichi ha byoujou ni atte ha, dare mo kazoku keizai o sasaerare naku te, kazoku zenin ha totemo komatta.
My father was unable to support the family economy due to his medical condition, so all the family members were living hard.

困難な状況にあって、無理な要求は全部認められないだろう。
Konnan na joukyou ni atte, muri na youkyuu ha zenbu mitomerare nai daro u.
Under difficult circumstances, we can not accept any impossible demands.

2. Expresses the meaning “Even in situations, N …”. The following describes something completely different from what the speaker anticipated. This is a literary structure.
How to use: Nにあっても

Examples:

悪い状況にあっても、彼はいつも楽観的に暮らしている。
Warui joukyou ni atte mo, kare ha itsumo rakkan teki ni kurashi te iru.
Even in bad spots, he always lives optimistically.

最低な場合にあっても、彼女は乗り越えるために一所懸命がんばります。
Saitei na baai ni atte mo, kanojo ha norikoeru tame ni isshokenmei ganbari masu.
Even in the worst situation, she always try her hardest to overcome it.
