Meaning and how to use :

1. Used to refer to the source of the quote. Often translated as “According to..”.
This is a old way of speaking, mostly used in written form. Its variant ことにゃ is mostly used in fairy tales.
Form: Vる+ことには

Examples:

ご主人さんの言うことには妻を殺す犯人は息子です。
Go shujin san no iu koto ni ha tsuma o korosu hannin ha musuko desu.
According to the husband, the murderer of his wife is actually the son.

おばあさんの言うことにゃいいことをするといいことももらえる。
obaasan no iu koto ni ?iikotoosurutoiikotomomoraeru.
According to the old lady, doing good deeds does goods for you.

おじいさんの教えることには人間は手間がかかって馬鹿なことをしてばかりいます。
ojiisan no oshieru koto ni ha ningen ha tema ga kakatte baka na koto o shi te bakari i masu.
According to my grandfather’s words, Human always waste time and energy to do stupid things.

2. Expresses the meaning “If can’t do.. then can’t do..” The first clause is the necessary condition for the latter clause.
Form: Vない+ことには

Examples:

ちゃんと勉強しないことには、いい仕事が見つけられない。
chanto benkyou shi nai koto ni ha, ii shigoto ga mitsukerare nai.
If you don’t study properly, you can’t find a good job.

まじめで実行しないことには、うまくできないだろう。
majime de jikkou shi nai koto ni ha, umaku deki nai daro u.
If you don’t execute properly, you can’t do any good.

本を読まないことには、知識がない。
hon o yoma nai koto ni ha, chishiki ga nai.
If you don’t read book, you can’t get any knowledge.
