Usage 1

…だけに

Meaning : Describe the meaning “A situation is the result of the action before that”

Example :

日本に何年間も住んでいただけに、日本語が上手です。
Nihon ni nannenkan mo sunde ita dake ni, nihongo ga jouzu desu.
I am good at Japanese because I have lived in Japan for many years.

世界中に旅行しただけに、どこでも友だちができた。
Sekaichuu ni ryokou shita dake ni, dokodemo tomodachi ga dekita.
Because I travelled all over the world, I have friends everywhere.

あの人は医学の研究者だけに、薬の名前がよく知っているね。
Ano hito ha igaku no kenkyuusha dake ni, kusuri no namae ga yoku shitte iru ne.
Because that person is a medical researcher, he knows the name of medicines well.

この歌は流行っているだけに、どんな店でも流されます。
Kono uta ha hayatte iru dake ni, donna mise demo nagasare masu.
Because this song is popular, it is played in any store.

あの子は若いだけに、休まずに2時間走り続けることができます。
Ano ko ha wakai dake ni, yasumazu ni ni jikan hashiri tsudukeru koto ga dekimasu.

Tanaka kun ha ryuugaku shita dakeni, kangae ga watashi tachi yori fukai desu.
Because Tanaka studied abroad, his thoughts are deeper than ours.

A「上品な彼女だけに、笑いもエレガントですね。」
B「そうですね。」
A : “Jouhin na kanojo dake ni, warai mo ereganto desune.”
B : “Sou desu ne.”
A : “Because she is elegant, even her smile is elegant.”

寛容な前田さんだけに、こんなことを気にならないでしょ。
Kanyou na maeda san dakeni, konna koto wo ki ni naranai desho.
Since Mr. Maeda is tolerant, he won’t mind this, will he?

父は動物の医者だけに、小さいごろから私は動物によく世話をして動物愛になりました。
Chichi ha doubutsu no isha dakeni, chisai goro kara watashi ha doubutsu ni yoku sewa wo shite doubutsu ai ni narimashita.

Juu gatsu dake ni, suzushii desu.
Because it’s October, it’s cool.

大企業の社長だけに、こんな問題をさっそくに解決することができるね。
Daikigyou no shachou dake ni, konna mondai wo sassoku ni kaiketsu suru koto ga dekiru ne.
Because he’s the president of a big company, he can solve this problem at once.

現代の若者は健康なだけに、何の危険な遊びでも試したい気持ちがある。
Gendai no wakamono ha kenkou na dakeni, nan no kiken na asobi demo tameshitai kimochi ga aru.
Because young people today are healthy, they want to try any dangerous game.

初めて出国するだけに、とても心配だ。
Hajimete shukkoku suru dakeni, totemo shinpai da.

だけになおさら (dake ni nao sara)

Usage : …だけになおさら

Meaning : Describe the meaning “Because ~, it is more ~”

Note : Sometimes we use なおのこと (nao no koto).

Example :

全力で頑張っただけになおさら、今回の試合で勝つのはとても嬉しいだ。
Zenryoku de ganbatta dakeni naosara, konkai no shiai de katsu noha totemo ureshii da.
Because I did my best, winning this match makes me even more happy.

兄は48時間も寝ずに働いていただけになおさら、倒れました。
Ani ha yonjuuhachi jikan mo nezuni hataraite ita dake ni naosara, taoremashita.
My brother had been working for 48 hours without sleeping, he collasped.

気温も下がっているし風も吹いているだけになおさら、とても寒いです。
Kion mo sagatteiru shi kaze mo fuite iru dake ni naosara, totemo samui desu.
It’s very cold because the temperature is falling all the more the wind is blowing.

英語がベラベラと話せるだけになおさら、彼は上司に重視される。
Eigo ga berabera to hanaseru dake ni naosara, kare ha joushi ni chuushi sare ru.
Because he can speak English fluently, he gets more attention from his boss.

雨が強く降っているだけになおさら、道に出かけるのは無理です。
Ame ga tsuyoku futteiru dake ni naosara, michi ni dekakeru noha muri desu.
Because it’s raining heavily, it is impossible to go out on the road.

世界で広く使われるだけになおさら、英語を勉強するのは当然のことだ。
Sekai de hiroku tsukawareru dake ni naosara, eigo wo benkyou suru noha touzen no koto da.
Because it’s widely used all over the world, it’s natural to study English.

A「態度が悪くて、仕事に不満があるだけになおさら、佐藤さんは首になりましたよ。」
B「そうか。仕方がないでしょ。」
A : “Taido ga warukute, shigoto ni fuman ga aru dake ni naosara, satou san ha kubi ni narimashita yo,”
B : “Souka. shikataganai desho.”
A : “Ms. Sato was fired because of her bad attitude and even more so, her dissatisfaction with work.”
B : “Is that so? It can’t be helped.”

津波に加えて、地震も起こっただけになおさら、亡くなった人は記録に上回った。
Tsunami ni kuwaete, jishin mo okotta dake ni naosara, nakunatta hito ha kiroku ni uwa mawatta.
Because of tsunamis and earthquakes, the number of deaths exceeded the record.

このレストランは安いだけになおさら、毎日行列するほど客が多いです。
Kono resutoran ha yasui dake ni naosara, mainichi rekkyou suru hodo kyaku ga ooi desu.
Because this restaurant is cheap, there are so many customers that queuing every day.

駅に近いに加えて、周りの環境は子供にいいだけになおさら、そのマンションは高いです。
Eki ni chikai ni kuwaete, mawari no kankyou ha kodomo ni ii dake ni naosara, sono manshon ha takai desu.
That apartment is expensive because it is near the station and the surrounding environment is good for children.

だけにかえって (dake ni kaette)

Usage : …だけにかえって

Meaning : Describe the meaning “It should be a good result, but it wasn’t…”. It is used to describe bad consequences that are not as expected.

Example :

新しい車を買っただけにかえって、知り合いによく借りられる。
Atarashii kuruma wo katta dake ni kaette, shiriai ni yoku kari rareru.
I bought a new car, so it is often borrowed by acquaintances.

勉強が上手だけにかえって、クラスメートに宿題をコッピさせるなんて面倒だ。
Benkyou ga jouzu dake ni kaette, kurasu me-to ni shukkudai wo koppi sase ru nante mendou da.
It’s troublesome to be copied homework by classmates just because you’re good at studying.

仕事で出世するだけにかえって、知り合いに依頼されて嫌な感じだ。
Shigoto de shusse suru dake ni kaette, shiriai ni irai sarete iya na kanji da.
Because of promotion at work, I feel uncomfortable when being asked by acquaintances.

ロシア語がわかるだけにかえって、よく周りの皆さんに通訳を頼まれる。
Roshia go ga wakaru dake ni kaette, yoku mawari no minasan ni tsuuyaku wo tanomareru.
I am often asked to interpret because I understand Russian.

A「田中さんは親切だけにかえって、悪い人に騙されやすいだろう。」
B「そうだね。知らない人に親切すぎないほうがいいよね。」
A : “Tanaka san ha shinsetsu dake ni kaette, warui hito ni dama sare yasui darou.”
B : “Sou dane. Shiranai hito ni shinsetsu suginai hou ga ii yone.”
A : “Mr. Tanaka is too kind, so he is easy to be deceived by bad people.”
B : “Yeah. It’s better not to be too kind to strangers.”

お金がたくさんあるだけにかえって、あの人は贅沢に生活を送って結局1円もなくなりました。
Okane ga takusan aru dake ni kaette, ano hito ha zeitaku ni seikatsu wo okutte kekkyoku ichien mo naku nari mashita.
Because of having a lot of money, that person lived a luxurious life and he finally didn’t have 1 yen.

成功するばかりだけにかえって、一度失敗したのにがっかりして気も出せない。
Seikou suru bakari dake ni kaette, ichido shippai shita noni gakkari shite kimochi mo dasenai.
Because of success all time, I can’t get better although I just failed once.

恵まれた知恵があるだけにかえって、誰でも無視して努力せずにそのままにしたら上手にならない。
Megumareta chie ga aru dake ni kaette, dare demo mushi shite doryoku sezuni sono mama ni shitara jouzu ni naranai.
He is blessed with wisdom, so he ignores everyone and if he keeps doing that and doesn’t make an effort, he won’t become good.

期待が大きすぎるだけにかえって、負けたときは失望も大きかった。
Kitai ga ookisugiru dake ni kaette, maketa toki ha shitsubou mo ookikatta.
The expectation was too great, so when I lost, I was very disappointed.
