VるかVないか
VたかVない(か)

Meaning and how to use :

1. Express meaning “yes…or no…”.Used both in negative and affirmative form of verbs.

For example

舞台に出場するかしないか決めてください。
Butai ni shutsujou suru ka shi nai ka kime te kudasai.
Let’s decide if you will appear on the stage or not.

その展覧会に一緒に行くか行かないか教えてください。
sono tenran kai ni issho ni iku ka ika nai ka oshie te kudasai.
Tell me whether you go with me to the exhibition or not.

文学が好きじゃないので、その作家は有名か有名じゃないかわからない。
bungaku ga suki ja nai node, sono sakka ha yuumei ka yuumei ja nai ka wakara nai.
I don’t like literature, so I don’t know whether this author is famous.

2. Dùng để diễn tả một thời điểm khó nói, không rõ rệt, mang tính tế nhị, thậm chỉ là không nói chắc được rằng việc đó đã xảy ra chưa (vào lúc nó được cho là xảy ra). Dùng cùng lúc dạng khẳng định và phủ định của động từ.

For example

本をめぐるか巡らないかのうちに、彼は突然先生に呼ばれる。
hon o meguru ka megura nai ka no uchi ni, kare ha totsuzen sensei ni yobareru.
Trong lúc chưa rõ mở được sách hay chưa thì anh ta đột nhiên bị thầy giáo gọi.

選手たちはビスとるの音が鳴ったかならないかのうちに、走り出しました。
senshu tachi ha bisu toru no oto ga natta ka nara nai ka no uchi ni, hashiridashi mashi ta.
athletes rush forward, but they don’t know if the gun has fired.

夜が明けるか明けないか、よくわからないけど、出発することにした。
yoru ga akeru ka ake nai ka, yoku wakara nai kedo, shuppatsu suru koto ni shi ta.
I don’t care if it’s dawn, I decide to go.
