Meaning and how to use :

Expresses the meaning “doing something while at it”. Often used when two actions happen at the same time, the latter action is more important to do.

Examples:

スーパーに行きがてら、本屋に行きましょう。
Supa ni iki ga tera, honya ni iki masho u.
If you go to the market, go to the bookstore as well while you’re at it.

散歩がてら、近くの公園に遊びに行ってみよう。
Sanpo ga tera, chikaku no kouen ni asobi ni itte miyo u.
Try walking and go to the park as well while you’re at it.

新しい文型を勉強しがてら、習った文法を復習します。
Atarashii bunkei o benkyou shi ga tera, naratta bunpou o fukushuu shi masu.
Study the new structures, and review the old ones too while you’re at it.

美術館に見学しがてら、知り合いの家に訪問します。
Bijutsukan ni kengaku shi ga tera, shiriai no ie ni houmon shi masu.
I will visit the museum and also visit my relation too while I’m at it.

旅行しがてら、そこの葉書きを集める。
Ryokou shi ga tera, soko no ha gaki o atsumeru.
When you go traveling, collect the postcards too while you’re at it.
