Express the comments or talking about the relationship with a person or something.

Example:

山田さんは佐藤さんに私をいとこだといいます。
Yamada san ha satou san ni watashi wo itoko da to iimasu.
Mr. Yamada told Mrs. Sato that I was his cousin.

あの子は僕のことを失敗者だといっていました。
Ano ko ha boku no koto wo shippaisha da to itteimashita.
That kid said that I was a loser.

僕は皆に高橋さんを弟だと言いました。
Boku ha mina ni takahashi san wo itouto da to iimashita.
I told everyone that Mr. Takahashi was my younger brother.

彼女は私のことをバカモノだといいました。
Kanojo ha watahsi no koto wo bakamono da to ii mashita.
She said that I was an idiot.

石田君は田中さんのことを天才だと言っていました。
Ishida kun ha Tanaka san no koto wo tensai da to itteimashita.
Ishida said that Tanaka was a genius.

Note: This structure is often used to quote someone’s speech.
