Express something that is unexpected with the bad meanings such as “horrible”, “hard”. It is often used when talking about unexpected results or people who are not as usual.

Example:

親に隠れてお金を盗んで遊びに行くとは、とんだ悪い子だ。
Oya ni kakurete okane wo musunde asobi ikutoha, tonda warui ko da.
What a bad child to steal money behind the parents to hang out.

とんだバカなやつに会った。
Tonda baka na yatsu ni atta.
I met a stupid guy.

ゴミ箱にゴミを捨てないなんてとんだ醜い行動だ。
Gomi bako ni gomi wo sutenainante tonda minikui koudou da.
It’s an ugly behavior to not throw garbage in the trash.

ファストフードを食べてばかりいるなんてとんだ体によくないことだ。
Fasutofu-do wo tabetebakariiru nante tonda karada ni yokunai koto da.
It is bad for the body to just eat fast food.

Tonda atama ga warui ko da.
What a stupid child.

Note: However, there are also cases of good judgement with intimacy. In this case, it means “a very interesting person, not an ordinary person”.
