JLPT N4 Grammar lesson 4. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N4 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Grammar structure number 16 :

~そうに/そうな/そうです~

Formation :

Vる/Vた+そうです
Aい+そうです
Aな( remove な)+そうです
いい→よさそう
そうなN→ used as an adjective before Noun
そうに→ used as an adverb

Explanation :

look like, seem like, hear like
used when expressing the speaker’s judgment or feeling

Example and meaning :

1. あなたは元気(げんき)そうになりましたよ。
You look like you are getting better.
2. 空(そら)を見(み)ると、雨(あめ)が降(ふ)るそうですね。
Looking at the sky, we can see that it’s going to rain.

Grammar structure number 17 :

~たがる~

Formation :

Vます(remove ます)+たがる

Explanation :

want, like
used when expressing a third person’s wish.

Example and meaning :

1.妹(いもうと)はスーパーへ行(い)きたがっている。
My sister wants to go to the supermarket.
2.みんなはしあわせに生(い)きりたがります。
Everybody wants to live happily.

Grammar structure number 18 :

~たところ

Formation :

Vたところ

Explanation :

after doing something then…
things that happened unexpectedly.

Example and meaning :

1.スーパーへ行(い)ったところ, もとのかれしに会(あ)った。
I met my ex-boyfriend on my way to the supermarket.
2.その料理(りょうり)を食(た)べたところ吐(は)きたかった。
I want to vomit after eating that dish.

Grammar structure number 19 :

~たほうがいい/ ~ないほうがいい

Formation :

Vたほうがいい/Vないほうがいい

Explanation :

should or should not do something

Example and meaning :

1.たばこをやめたほうがいいよ。
You should quit smoking.
2.休憩きゅうけいしないでずっと勉強べんきょうしないほうがいい。
You should not keep on studying without taking a rest.

Grammar structure number 20 :

~ために

Formation :

Vる+ために
Nのために

Explanation :

for, to, in order to
expresses the speaker’s wish

Example and meaning :

1.健康(けんこう)のために毎日(まいに)ちジョギングする。
I go jogging every morning for good health.
2.奨学金(しょうがくきん)をもらうためにずっと勉強(べんきょう)します。
I study continuously to get the scholarship.
