JLPT N4 Grammar lesson 1. Hi everyone! After finishing JLPT N5 Grammar, in this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N4 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Grammar structure number 1 :

~ なら~

Formation :

N+なら

Expalaination :

if, about ~

used to indicate range or things mentioned earlier

Example and meaning :

1.東京(とうきょう)なら行(い)きたくなくて、沖縄(おきなわ)なら行(い)ってみたい。

If it’s Tokyo then I don’t want to go, but I want to go to Okinawa.

2.あいつの能力(のうりょく)ならこれまではいいです。

About his abilities, they are good.

Grammar structure number 2 :

~ ば~

Formation :

Aい(removeい)+ければ
Aな(remove な) + ならば
N+ならば

Verb :

change ending from ‘u’ column to ‘e’ column, then + ば. Ex : 買う -> 買ば (う is changed to え). たべ-> たべ

Expalaination :

if ~

indicate the condition for something to happen

doesn’t express the speaker’s will or command

Example and meaning :

1.高(たか)ければ、買(か)いません。
If it’s expensive, then I won’t buy it.

2.ゆっくりは話(はな)せば、わかります。
If you talk slowly, I can understand.

Grammar structure number 3 :

~(も)~し、~し~

Formation :

Vる/Vた+し
Aい+し
Aな(remove な)/Nだ/だった+し

Expalaination :

..and..and, not only… but also…
used to express reasons for the next action.

Example and meaning :

1.このシャツ安(やす)いし、大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)だし、買(か)います。
This shirt is cheap and durable, I’ll buy it.

2.あの女(おんな)のひとはきれいだし、性格(せいかく)もいいし、大好(だいす)きです。
That woman is not only pretty but also has nice personality too, I like her.

Grammar structure number 4 :

~Vようになる

Formation :

Vる+ようになる

Expalaination :

can finally ~
used to express the change that couldn’t be done or couldn’t happen before.

Example and meaning :

1.私(わたし)はやっと手足(てあし)は自由(じゆう)に運動(うんどう)できるようになる。
I now can finally move my hands and feet freely.

2.すしをたべられるようになる。
I can finally eat Sushi.

Grammar structure number 5 :

~Vる/Vないようにする~

Formation :

Vるようにする
Vないようにする

Expalaination :

trying to…, trying not to….

Example and meaning :

1.甘(あま)いものを食(た)べないようにする。
I’m trying not to eat sweet food.

2.大(おお)きい声(こえ)で話(はな)してみんなは聞(き)こえるようにする
I’m trying to talk loudly so everyone can understand.

  • Grammar Structur 2/Formation/V
    –> replace ‘u’ vowel ending with the ‘e’ vowel ending of the same row + ba? Instead of just removing ru?

    taberu –> tabereba
    hanasu –> hanaseba
    uru –> ureba
    I think it’s not that clear in your description ó_ò I’m sorry for bothering!
