JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 23. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 111 :

もし+Vた(な)ら/Aかった(な)ら/Aだった(な)ら/Nだった(な)ら

Explanation:

If ~
This is actually just the speaker’s supposition, hope, not real.

For example:

もし、私が彼だったなら、彼女を捨てない。
Moshi, watashi ga kare datta nara, kanojo wo sutenai.
If I were him, I wouldn’t leave her.

もし、留学しなかったなら、今ごろは国で結婚しているだろう。
Moshi, ryuugaku shinakatta nara, ima goro wa kuni de kekkon shite iru darou.
If I hadn’t gone to study abroad, I would be married around this time.

Structure 112 :

もし+(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+としても/としたって

Explanation:

Even if ~ (the latter clause will still happen unaffectedly)

For example:

もし、勉強したとしても、試験に落ちるだろう。
Moshi, benkyou shita to shitemo, shiken ni ochiru darou.
Even if I study, I will still fail the exam.

もし、時間があったとしても、旅行に行かない。
Moshi, jikan ga atta to shitemo, ryokou ni ikanai.
Even if I have time, I still won’t go travelling.

もし、決勝戦に残ったとしたって、優勝は難しいでしょう。
Moshi, kesshousen ni nokotta to shitatte, yuushou wa muzukashii deshou.
Even if I get into the final round, it’s hard to get the championship.

Structure 113 :

もしも+(V/N/Aい/Aな)普なら/Aなら/Nなら/Vたら/Nだったら/Aだったら/Aかったら/Vても/Aくても/Aでも/Nでも

Explanation:

To emphasize もし in case something bad happens ~

For example:

もしも、日本に行けたら、祇園祭に参加したいです。
Moshimo, Nihon ni iketara, Gion-matsuri ni sanka shitai desu.
If I could go to Japan, I would like to participate in the Gion Festival.

もしも、私が男だったら、あなたみたいな女と付き合わない。
Moshimo, watashi ga otoko dattara, anata mitai na onna to tsukiawanai.
If I were a man, I wouldn’t go out with a woman like you.

もしも、生まれ変われるなら、男になりたい。
Moshimo, umare kawareru nara, otoko ni naritai.
If I were born again, I would like to be a boy.

Structure 114 :

Vる/Vない+ことになる

Explanation:

Decided to be ~
Used to show decisions that are made by the subject itself, but other factors such as by default or made by other people. ことになっている: Rules~

For example:

卒業式は7月に行うことになりました。
Sotsugyou-shiki wa 7-gatsu ni okonau koto ni narimashita.
The graduation ceremony will be held in July.

私は来週日本に転勤することになりました。
Watashi wa raishuu Nihon ni tenkin suru koto ni narimashita.
I will be transferred to Japan next week. 

Structure 115 :

Vる/Vない+ことにする

Explanation:

To decide ~
Used to show a decision that is made by the subject itself, mentioning the decision maker. ことにしている: The result of a decision that has become a habit.

For example:

学校の文化祭に参加しないことにしました。
Gakkou no bunkasai ni sanka shinai koto ni shimashita.
I’ve decided not to attend the school festival.

明日からお酒をやめることにした。
Ashita kara osake wo yameru koto ni shita.
I’ve decided to stop drinking alcohol from tomorrow.
