JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 18. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 86 :

To sum up。(なぜなら/なぜかというと/どうしてかというと)、the reason +からだ

Explanation:

~ If you’re asking why then it’s because ~

For example:

来週、国に帰る予定です。なぜなら、親友の結婚式に出席するからです。
I have planned to return to the country next week. The reason is to attend my best friend’s wedding.

学校を変えた。なぜかというと、僕のレベルのクラスがなかったからだ。
I have transferred to a new school, the reason is: the old school doesn’t have a class that is on my level.

Structure 87 :

N1はもちろん、N2も
[文]のはもちろん、~も

Explanation:

N1 is obviously ~ , but N2 is, too.
As a matter of course N1 is obviously ~, typical, then N2 is also ~ .

For example:

彼は勉強はもちろん、スポーツもよくできる。
He is obviously good at studying, he is good at sports too.

キャベツは炒めて食べるのはもちろん、生で食べてもおいしいです。
Fried cabbage (of course) obviously tastes good, it tastes good when eaten raw too.

Structure 88 :

(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+ばかりか…(も)/ばかりでなく…(も)Chú ý:Nだ、Aだな

Explanation:

Not only ~ but also ~
Used to mention when a thing, situation ascends from a lower degree to a higher degree.

For example:

あの店は味が悪いばかりか、店員の態度もひどい。
In that restaurant, not only the food is terrible, the staff’s attitude is also atrocious.

私は漢字ばかりか、ひらがなも書けません。
I can’t write not only Kanji, but also Hiragana.

Structure 89 :

(N/[文]の)+に+比べ/比べて~

Explanation:

Compared to A, B is ~
Used to mention B by comparing with A.

For example:

試験の問題は昨年に比べて易しくなかった。
This year’s exam is not as easy compared to last year’s one.

店に買うのに比べ、通信販売は便利だが、欠点もある。
Buying online (on the internet, by phone..) is convenient compared to buying in stores, but it has a disadvantage too.

Structure 90 :

(N/[文]の)+に+対して/対し/対しては/対しても/対するN

Explanation:

To N,
Used to direct at/ to that situation, in response to that situation, followed by an expression show an effect on it such as a behaviour, an attitude directed at/ to N.

For example:

田中先生は、生徒に対して厳しい。
Teacher Tanaka is really strict with students.

まじめな長男に対して、次男は遊んでばかりで学校もよく休む。
Completely opposite to the oldest son, the second son plays all day and often skip class.
