JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 16. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 76 :

(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+ということだ
Note: Nだ

Explanation:

Heard that ~
Used to say what you’ve heard.

For example:

田中さんから電話があって、少し遅れるということです。
There is a phone call from Tanaka, He said he would be a little late.

試験の結果は70%、つまり合格ということです。
If the test result was 70%, it means you pass.

Structure 77 :

Vる/Vない+ことだ

Explanation:

Must/ Must not do V
That’s the best way (an indirect warning, order).

For example:

暖かくして、ゆっくり休むことだ。
(you need to) Keep warm (turn on the heater) and relax.

無理をしないことです。
Don’t try too hard.

Structure 78 :

(どんなに/どれだけ/どれほど)+
(Aい/Aかった/Aな/Aだった/Vる/Vた)+ことか

Explanation:

Don’t know ~ how much
Used to describe infinitely large amounts and quantity.

For example:

合格できたら、どんなにうれしいことか。
If I pass the exam, don’t know how happy I will be.

何度注意したことか。
How many times I have warned you? (warned many times)

Structure 79 :

((N/Aな)普/Aかった/Vた)+っけ

Explanation:

Seems like ~, Is is true that ~ ?
To confirm things you don’t remember clearly (when talking to yourself).
Mostly used when speaking.
It’s also OK to use[でしたっけ/ますっけ].

For example:

国へ帰るのは来週だったっけ?
Is this true that will you return to the country next week?

明日のパーティーのこと、話し(まし)たっけ?
About the party tomorrow, have I told you before?

Structure 80:

Vる+しかない

Explanation:

There is only one way left ~/ there is no other way ~

For example:

できるまで、やるしかない。
There is no other way than trying our best.

直せないから、新しいのを買うしかなかった。
Can’t fix this, there is only one way left that is to buy a new one.
