JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 16. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 76 :

(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+ということだ
Note: Nだ

Explanation:

Heard that ~
Used to say what you’ve heard.

For example:

田中さんは、来週結婚するということです。
Tanaka-san wa, raishuu kekkon suru to iu koto desu.
I heard that Tanaka will get married next week. 

昔はここに病院があったということだ。
Mukashi wa koko ni byouin ga atta to iu koto da.
I heard that there used to be a hospital here.

Structure 77 :

Vる/Vない+ことだ

Explanation:

Must/ Must not do V
That’s the best way (an indirect warning, order).

For example:

毎日運動することだ。
Mainichi undou suru koto da.
You should exercise everyday.

寝る前に食べないことです。
Neru mae ni tabenai koto desu.
Don’t eat before going to bed.

Structure 78 :

(どんなに/どれだけ/どれほど)+
(Aい/Aかった/Aな/Aだった/Vる/Vた)+ことか

Explanation:

Don’t know ~ how much
Used to describe infinitely large amounts and quantity.

For example:

君がいなくてどんなに寂しいことか。
Kimi ga inakute donnani sabishii kotoka.
How lonely I will be without you.

どんなにこの雨を待っていたことか。
Donnani kono ame wo matte ita kotoka.
I have been waiting for this rain for a long time.

Structure 79 :

((N/Aな)普/Aかった/Vた)+っけ

Explanation:

Seems like ~, Is is true that ~ ?
To confirm things you don’t remember clearly (when talking to yourself).
Mostly used when speaking.
It’s also OK to use[でしたっけ/ますっけ].

For example:

あの人、山田先生だっけ?
Ano hito, Yamada-sensei dakke?
Is that person Mr. Yamada?

今日は木曜日だったっけ?
Kyou wa mokuyoubi dattakke?
Is it Thursday today?

Structure 80:

Vる+しかない

Explanation:

There is only one way left ~/ there is no other way ~

For example:

彼に連絡できないから、待つしかない。
Kare ni renraku dekinai kara, matsu shikanai.
I can’t contact him, so there is no choice but to wait.

みんなに謝るしかない。
Minna ni ayamaru shikanai.
I have no choice but to apologize to everyone.
