JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 15. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 71 :

(N/Aい/Aな/Vる)+(くらい/ぐらい/ほど)+(だ/に/のN)

Explanation:

About, around ~, to the point that ~
Used to show quantity or time in general.
For higher levels, do not use  くらい/ぐらい use ほど. Ex: 死ぬほど

For example:

あのホテルはどのくらいの大きさですか。
Ano hoteru wa dono kurai no ookisa desuka.
How big is that hotel?

それを見て死ぬほどびっくりした。
Sore wo mite shinu hodo bikkuri shita.
I was frightened to death when I saw it.

Structure 72 :

(Aい/Aな)+ほど/Nほど

Explanation:

The more ~ the more ~
Used to show when something increases, another thing also increases.

For example:

安いものほどよく売れる。
Yasui mono hodo yoku ureru.
The cheaper the product is, the better it sells.

黒板に近いほど字が見やすい。
Kokuban ni chikai hodo ji ga miyasui.
The closer to the blackboard, the easier for you to read characters written on it.

Structure 73 :

VばVるほどAければAいほどAならAなほど

Explanation:

The more ~ the more ~
Used to repeat a word to express an idea: An increase in something results in an increase in another thing.

For example:

タバコは吸えば吸うほど体に悪い。
Tabako wa sueba suu hodo karada ni warui.
The more you smoke, the worse your health is.

病院へ行くのは早ければ早いほどいいです。
Byouin e iku no wa hayakereba hayai hodo ii desu.
The sooner you go to the hospital, the better.

Structure 74 :

(N1くらい/N1ほど)+N[人]はいない/N[物/事]はない

Explanation:

There is no N as ~ as N1

For example:

彼女ほど美しい人はいない。
Kanojo hodo utsukushii hito wa inai.
There is no one as beautiful as her.

天ぷらほど美味しい料理はない。
Tenpura hodo oishii ryouri wa nai.
There is no other dish as delicious as tempura.

Structure 75 :

Vる+ことはない

Explanation:

Not necessary, not having to do V.
Used to show courage.

For example:

心配することはないよ。
Shinpai suru koto wa nai yo.
There is no need to worry.

明日、会社に行くことはありません。
Ashita, kaisha ni iku koto wa arimasen.
You don’t have to go to the company tomorrow.
