JLPT N2 Grammar lesson 33. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N2 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Structure 161:

A。それはそうと B

Explanation:

On a different note (when changing the subject from whatever you are talking about to something else that is unrelated).

For example:

「さっきの映画は面白かったですね。それはそうと、今は何時ですか。」
Sakki no eiga wa omoshirokatta desu ne. Sore wa sou to, ima wa nanji desuka.
“The movie we just watched was interesting, right? By the way, what time is it now?”

「今日は寒いですね。それはそうと、昨日の試合はどうでしたか。」
Kyou wa samui desu ne. Sore wa sou to, kinou no shiai wa dou deshitaka.
It’s cold today, right? By the way, how was the match yesterday?

Structure 162:

A すなわち A’

Explanation:

In other words.
Means.
Formally, normally used in writing.

For example:

この写真は、母の妹、すなわち私のおばによって撮られた。
Kono shashin wa, haha no imouto, sunawachi watashi no oba ni yotte torareta.
This photo was taken by my mother’s younger sister, in other words, my aunt.

卒業式は明日の明日、すなわち明後日に行われます。
Sotsugyou shiki wa ashita no ashita, sunawachi asatte ni okonawaremasu.
The graduation ceremony will be held tomorrow of tomorrow, in other words, the day after tomorrow.

Structure 163:

A あるいは B

Explanation:

Or maybe, or

For example:

電話、あるいはメールでご連絡ください。
Denwa, aruiwa meeru de gorenraku kudasai.
Please contact us by phone or email.

あるいは彼が嘘を言ったかもしれない。
Aruiwa kare ga uso wo itta kamoshirenai.
Perhaps he told a lie.

Structure 164:

A。だが B

Explanation:

A. But B (when speaking)

For example:

風邪をひいている。だが仕事を休むわけにはいかない。
Kaze wo hiite iru. Daga shigoto wo yasumu wake niwa ikanai.
I have a cold. But I can’t take a day off from work.

今日は日曜日だ。だが学校に行かなければならない。
Kyou wa nichiyoubi da. Daga gakkou ni ikanakereba naranai.
Today is Sunday. But I have to go to school.

Structure 165:

A。だって B

Explanation:

It’s because.

For example:

「なぜ食べないの?」「だって、まずいんだもん。」
“Naze tabenai no?”  “Datte, mazuinda mon.”
“Why don’t you eat?”  “Because it tastes bad.”

「映画に行かないの?」「うん。だって、お腹がすいたんだもん。」
“Eiga ni ikanai no?”  “Un. Datte, onaka ga suitanda mon.”
“Don’t you go to the movies?”  “Yeah. It’s because I’m hungry.”
