JLPT N2 Grammar lesson 33. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N2 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Structure 161:

A。それはそうと B

Explanation:

On a different note (when changing the subject from whatever you are talking about to something else that is unrelated).

For example:

「今日の授業、面白かったね。」「運、すごくためになった。それはそうと、今度の試験いつだっけ?」
Today’s class is interesting, right? Yes, I’ve learnt a lot. On a different note, when is the next exam?

「春になりましたね。それはそうと、田中さんの息子さん、大学受かったでしょうか。」
It feels like spring. On a different note, Tanaka’s son went to university, right?

Structure 162:

A すなわち A’

Explanation:

In other words.
Means.
Formally, normally used in writing.

For example:

「母の兄、即ち僕のおじですが。。。」
My mother’s younger brother, in other words, my uncle.

このペットボトルには1000ミリリットル、すなわち1リットルの水が入っています。
This bottle contains 1000ml of water, in other words, there is 1 liter of water in it.

Structure 163:

A あるいは B

Explanation:

Or maybe, or

For example:

ファックス、あるいはメールでお知らせください。
Let me know via fax or maybe email.

来週の火曜日の午後はどうですか。あるいは水曜日の午前でもかまいませんが。。。
How about next tuesday? Or maybe wednesday morning.

Structure 164:

A。だが B

Explanation:

A. But B (when speaking)

For example:

これは難しい挑戦だ。だが失敗を恐れてはいけない。
This is a difficult challenge. But I’m not worried that I would lose.

生活は貧しい。だが幸せだ。
We are poor. But we are happy.

Structure 165:

A。だって B

Explanation:

It’s because.

For example:

「何を怒ってるの?」「だって、約束を破ったじゃないか。」
What are you mad at about? Isn’t that because you have broken your promise?

「テストの点、よかったんだって?」「うん。だってやさしかったんだもん。」
Heard that you got a good grade on the exam? Yes, it’s because it’s easy.
