JLPT N2 Grammar lesson 15. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce to you the JLPT N2 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Structure 71:

Nである/ A/ A(minus な)である/ Vる+ 反面

Explanation:

But/ On the other hand
Used for describing contradiction.

For example:

このアパートは駅に近い反面、家賃が高い。
Kono apaato wa eki ni chikai hanmen, yachin ga takai.
This apartment is close to the station but on the other hand, the rent is high.

パソコンは便利な反面、壊れやすい。
Pasokon wa benrina hanmen, koware yasui.
Computers are convenient but on the other hand, they are easy to break.

Structure 72:

Nである/ A/ A(minus な)である/ Vる+一方(で)

Explanation:

But.
On the contrary.

For example:

世の中には優しい人がいる一方で、悪い人もいる
Yononaka ni wa yasashii hito ga iru ippou de, warui hito mo iru.
There are good people in the world but on the contrary, there are also bad people.

このあたりは、静かな一方、不便である。
Kono atari wa, shizukana ippou, fuben dearu.
This place is quiet but on the contrary, very inconvenient.

Structure 73:

Vる一方だ

Explanation:

To have the propensity/ Gradually.
More and more.

For example:

大気中のCO2濃度の上昇とともに、地球の温暖化は進む一方だ。
Taikichuu no CO2 noudo no joushou to tomoni, chikyuu no ondanka wa susumu ippouda.
Along with the increase in atmospheric CO2, the globe warming is increasing more and more.

病状は悪くなる一方だ。
Byoujou wa waruku naru ippou da.
The condition keeps getting worse.

Structure 74:

Vるべきだ

Explanation:

Should do what.
Used to express an opinion about something in general, to give advice, a warning, command to the other person.
Used in both speaking and writing.

For example:

皆に謝るべきだ。
Mina ni ayamaru beki da.
I should apologize to everyone.

あなたはこの映画を見るべきではない。
Anata wa kono eiga wo miru beki dewa nai.
You shouldn’t watch this movie.

もっと勉強するべきだった。
Motto benkyou suru beki datta.
I should have studied harder.

Structure 75:

V( minus ない) → Vざるをえない

Explanation:

Don’t want to do something but still have to do it anyways.

For example:

彼女に会いに行かざるをえない。
Kanojo ni ai ni ikazaru wo enai.
I have no choice but to go and see her.

社長の命令に従わざるをえない。
Shachou no meirei ni shitagawazaru wo enai.
I have no choice but to follow the director ’s order.
