Common phrases using the word 気 (ki). In Japanese, there are many phrases go with certain words like 足、手、頭、気、身… These words are used very commonly in everyday conversations.

In this article, LearnJapanesedaily would like to introduce to use common phrases using the word 気.

The ones in orange are used very commonly.

1. 気があう:To connect, click, get along well with someone, to understand someone.

For example:

気があわない人といっしょに仕事をするのは一番いやだ。
Kiga awanaihitoto isshoni shigotowo surunoha ichiban iyada.

It’s hard working with someone whom you can’t get along.

2. 気がある:Interested in doing something, plan to, want to do something. (opposite with 気がない)

For example:

君はしっかり働く気があるのか。
Kimiha shikkari hatarakukiga arunoka

Are you sure you want to do this?

大学べ行く気があるなら金を出してあげよう。
Daigakuhe ikukiga arunara kanewo dashite ageyou

If you plan to go to university, I (dad) will take care of the expenses.

3. 気が多い:kiga ooi : Want to try everything (constantly change their mind)

For example:

魚屋をやったり、菓子屋をやったり、八百屋をやったり、気が多くていろいろやったりみたけれど、どの仕事も長くつづかなかった。
Sakanayawo yattari, okashiyawo yattari, yaoyawo yattari, kigaookute iroiro yattari mitakeredo, donoshigotomo nagaku tsudukanakatta

Selling fishes, sweets, vegetable… I have tried many things (constantly changing), but couldn’t stick with it for long.

4. 気が大きい:(Open-minded) Carefree, do not nitpick …

For example:

彼はほめられると気が大きくなって、たのまれたことをなんでも引きうけてしまう。
Kareha homerareruto kigaookunatte, tanomaretakotowo nandemo hikiuketeshimau

He is said to be more open-minded, never refuse to help people.

5. 気が置けない:Laid back, casual.

For example:

小学校の時の友だちはみんな気が置けない人ばかりでたのしい。
Shougakkou no toki no tomodachiha minna kiga okenaihito bakaride tanoshii

Friends from elementary are all easy going (laid back), it’s fun to catch up with them.

6. 気が重い:(means heavy) Heavy mood (uncomfortable), pressured.

For example:

日曜日も仕事があって気が重い。
nichiyoubimo shigotoga atte kigaomoi

Working on sunday is so stressing (uncomfortable).

7. 気がかわる:(Change your mind) Change your attention, change your interest.

For example:

赤い靴を買おうと思ったが気がかわって黒い靴にした
akai kutsuwo kaouto omottaga kiga kawattte kuroi kutsuni shita

At first, I wanted to buy the red pair of shoes but changed my mind and bought the black ones.

8. 気がきくAttentive (to details)

For example:

暑いのにビールも出さないなんて、気がきかない人だなあ
atsuinoni bi-rumo dasanainante, kiga kikanaihitodana

It’s so hot but they don’t offer beer, how inconsiderate.

9. 気が気でない:Extremely worried, unable to calm down.

For example:

電車が遅れて、飛行機に間にあうかどうか気が気でない。
Denshaga okurete, hikoukini maniauka douka kigakidenai

The tram is late, I’m so worried, don’t know if it’s possible to get to the airport on time.

10. 気が知れない:Not able to understand what the other person is thinking.

For example:

駐車場もないのにどうして200万円もする自動車を買ったのか気が知れない
chuushajoumo nainoni doushite 200manenmo suru jidoushawo kattanoka kigasshiranai

Can’t understand why someone buys a 2 million yen car when there is no place to park.
